To go along with my previous post, my 13 year old reminded me about "The Lily Series" by Christian author Nancy Rue. The series is put out by the Young Women of Faith. The series includes both fiction and non-fiction books. The fiction book centers around the character "Lily", and has a major theme or topic that matches the topic in the non-fiction book that partners with it. For example: Lily Series #1 is titled "Here's Lily" and she is a 6th grader dealing with beauty the way our culture portrays it; however, she learns what REAL beauty is. The non-fiction book that goes with it is called "The Beauty Book" and is about preteens and skin care, hair care, inner beauty vs. outward appearance, etc. The second novel in the series is called "Lily Robbins, M.D. and goes along with the one I highly recommend for girls ages 9-12.
It is "The Body Book: It's a God Thing". The book is centered around "girl stuff" like puberty, physical/hormonal changes and what to expect, and exercise. It is up to date info that centers on personal issues with a Biblical perspective. The book contains little "quizzes" that girls can take and moms can over the quiz with them and use it as a teaching tool. There are no "correct" answers. It is based on what is happening with their bodies, their emotions, their thoughts on their spiritual development. There are sections that specifically explain the menstrual cycle and what to expect. My oldest found it very helpful and I had her read it before she took Health class in 5th grade, which in our state, is when the students first learn about bodily changes and begin to discuss body image issues. It was great for us to have this book as it is based on the Word of God and that is how we are training up our daughters. I plan on passing the book down to my 8 year old in another year!
If you know of any other age-appropirate books on the topic of body image, please leave me a comment!
