"If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you." This verse is from John 15: 7 (the NIV).
The title of my daughters' devotional for today is "Heavenly Santa Claus?" I was reading it over to prepare for our devotional time later today, and I was struck by some of the passages (I have always known this, and was taught this from childhood but for some reason, it really struck me as very important for today's generation of children, and especially during this season where so much materialism is evident in an affluent suburb like where we live).
Here is a section of the devotional that I really want to instill in my children. I am praying today that they will really listen and reflect on these things:
"...we don't always get what we pray for. Why? It might be that you've asked for something that's not God's will for your life. People tend to concentrate on the 'asking and receiving' part. But the Bible says IF you remain and abide in Jesus----and IF His words remain and stay in you---THEN you can ask what you desire and be assured of the answer. When we abide or live in him (and not just visit occasionally), we are trusting him all the time, learning from him, leaning on him, reading and studying his Word daily, and in frequent prayer about things. We are searching to know the mind of Christ." (GirlzRock Devotions/FaithGirlz by Kristi Holl, c.2005)
I desire for my daughters, especially my oldest who sees alot of worldliness in her high school, to really know the mind of Christ. To abide in Him daily so they will be able to discern his will for their lives. I want to stress to them today that lots of times, when we are abiding in Him, He changes our desires to match up with His desires for us. And the more we get to know Jesus, the more fruit He will produce in our lives.
Other verses I will have them read: Psalm 37: 4 which states "delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart."
Other verses we will look up: "he taught me and said, "Lay hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands and you will live." Prov. 4: 4
Deuteronomy 6: 6-9: These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates."
I want to encourage my girls that when they pray, to ask God what HE wants for their lives!

Thank you very much for quoting from my devotional and your kind comments. It means a lot to me to hear about people who are using it--even with older daughters. I have three daughters of my own--and now a granddaughter. They are special treasures!
