This is my oldest daughter, Courtney, age 14, showing me what she wants to wear Saturday evening to the Winter Ball. Winter Ball??? I thought that was for upper classmen! She says No, it is for the entire student body....anyone with a valid S-----High School ID can attend. The school requires that dances be either semi-formal or formal. Very unlike junior high which was casual all the way...sometimes a little too casual. (we also didn't let her go to all the jr. high ones). But...since she does very well academically and hasn't really been spending alot of our money lately, we agreed she could go as long as she paid for her own ticket. We decided on a barter system thing: she is going to babysit her sister from 9-2 on Saturday so my husband and I can attend the Marriage Seminar at our church! (more on that later!) and she will "earn" the ticket to go to the dance. Since the tickets are only $15.0o, we feel like we are getting the better end of the deal!
The Winter Ball is sponsored by our high school's Key Club and all the proceeds go to a non-profit agency here in our local community. This is great for the teens to see....so many of them have "stuff" so it is good to see their ticket money going for a good cause.
Our daughter is only 14 so we don't let her date yet but she is going with a group of her friends. There are about 7 of them that she is close with.
The dress is one I did not have to buy! Praise be to God for that! It was passed down from Courtney's cousin Beth, age 17, a senior who lives in MA. Beth never wore this....the tag was still on it! It is brand new! And since Beth is not much bigger than Courtney, it fits well. The shoes are the ones she wore to the Homecoming dance...still in style so hey....they work!
I did tell her we were NOT getting the fancy hairdo nor the French tips on her nails. If it was the prom, then Yes! So, on Saturday, around our house.....we will be a bit teary-eyed watching her go off in her dance attire and realizing that this precious gift from God is only a few short years away from leaving our nest and going off to college. Sigh....where do the years go??

Oh Faith, she looks so beautiful, I love her dress, I still cannot get over the fact that when I look at her eyes it is like looking at you. She is so grown up!!
Hi Erin: I know. The time is going by too darn fast! Of course I don't need to tell YOU that...your baby is gonna graduate!!!
She looks absolutely lovely. The color of the dress is very striking on her!
We struggled with the dance issues a lot at our house. I waffle on my stand while my husband is dead set against it. My oldest's high school graduation will be her first dance. She's alwasy accepted that but my youngest whose 13 has really been working on us to let her go. Sometimes I find these issues really confusing and hard. And why I just hijacked your comments to tell you all that I'll never know! LOL.
HI Susanne: we discussed it as well at our house when she became a 6th grader. at our elem. school we have what is called a Family Dance nite once a year. It is really just one of the music teachers acting as dj, the kids play games, the older kids "dance" and there are school projects to view. then in jr high is when we only allowed her to go to one dance and after that one, she decided she didn't like the atmosphere anyways there and none of her Christian friends went so...now at the high school she only goes to the "formal" ones. They are chaperoned by the 2 hall principals and some pta parents so that helps. also, once they leave they cannot come back in which cuts down on rowdiness. It was a tough decision but so far so good. We take it year by year.
Faith!
I can't get over how much C looks like you!!!
I showed N her picture and she said that she looked older and she looked nice in her dress. How old was C when you left? I don't think that I have seen her since...
HI Karen: yes people say she looks like me especially the eyes. She has my body type although more of a "figure" than I did at age 14. She was just about to turn 12 when we left...she had just graduated from 6th grade. We didn't let her wear the strapless look to the dance though..she wore a scarf type thing similar to a stole. I am having trouble transferring the pics from the other computer over to this one otherwise I would post one of her and her BF the nite of the dance.
