I finished this in just 2 days.
It's not a difficult book.....I don't think ANY of Patterson's novels are difficult....they are definite page-turners with their very short chapters and favorite characters. This is the 19th book in the Alex Cross series and I have read every single one. In order. I love them. WHY? Because I love the main characters who appear in all the books. Once again, this had me reading late into the night and while waiting for ballet class to end! I probably should have finished the book that is on the Nook but this book was just so much more exciting!
STORY SUMMARY
Alex Cross is enjoying Christmas Eve with his family. His family includes his grandmother "Nana Mama" (who is still going strong in her 90's), his wife Bree, his children Damon and Jannie (from his first wife who was killed years ago), and the foster child, Ava, whom they are taking care of for a while. His son Ali is with the woman who gave birth to him (Alex has custody of Ali) for the holidays.
It is snowing in Washington D.C. and Alex is enjoying the pecan pie when all of a sudden he is called out to try to talk to a madman who has taking a family hostage.
The family is the ex-wife of the madman, named Henry Fowler. The situation is turning ugly and just as it peaks, another situation explodes, in another part of Washington, D.C. No one could have predicted this and it puts millions of people at risk. It is a red alert.
Alex is forced to make a decision that could end many lives even while saving some....including his own.
Will Alex make it home in time for Christmas??
MY THOUGHTS
As is typical of Patterson's writing, this book is fast-paced, action-packed and suspenseful. I love how he re-introduces a former character even though I won't tell you who it is as I don't want to spoil it for you.
It is a thriller. I love how he starts the book with a petty crime in a church and then gets right into the hostage situation. Just when you are wondering "why is the hostage situation over and done with and I'm only 1/4 into the book?" he thrusts you into the real main plot.....and it's a little scary. It's scary to me because, in today's world, this very thing COULD happen. And I highly doubt we have any Metro police in our nation's capital who are quite as adept as Alex is at hunting down a serial killer at the terrorist level.
This book is great if you like the Alex Cross series and are keeping up with the character's family.
In my opinion, this book is appropriate for ages 16 and older.
On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, I rate this a 10.
