This is the author's first adult novel.
It was pretty good if you like an action packed thriller with a bit of romance and mystery thrown in but not super great.
STORY SUMMARY
Nicolette Farrell lives and works in Philadelphia. She is a school counselor and her fiance, Everett, is a well-paid lawyer. They are engaged to be married, but no date has been set yet. She has come a long way from where she grew up in Cooley Ridge, North Carolina, a very small mountain town where everyone knows your secrets....or at least they think they do.
Nic (as everyone calls her) hasn't been back to Cooley Ridge for any length of time in 10 years. She did go back briefly to attend the wedding of her brother Daniel and his wife Laura, now pregnant. Ten years ago, Nic was 18 and her best friend Corinne disappeared. She also broke up with her boyfriend, Tyler (who is still single and still living and working in Cooley Ridge). Tyler is the guy Nic thought she was going to marry. Until so much changed.
Nic gets a phone call from her brother that their dad, now in a nursing care facility, is not doing well. She heads back to Cooley Ridge since she has the summer off, and begins to go through the old house to get it ready to sell.
However, within a couple days of her return, another girl (Annaliese, whom Tyler happens to be dating) goes missing! The last time she was seen was late evening behind her house, heading into the woods.
Nic begins to experience a horrible sense of deja vu!
She begins to unravel the mystery and soon learns that her neighbors, and her family, have some shocking secrets.
She also begins to learn the truth about what really happened to Corinne all those years ago.
MY THOUGHTS
I wanted to love this book but I ended up just feeling like.....eh.
It was fast-paced but I didn't care for the backwards in time thing. It seemed a bit confusing to me.
The setting description was excellent as was most of the character development.
It was a bit predictable in spots but I did keep reading to see if some of my predictions were accurate.
The title is misleading because really there are only two missing girls. So that's a bit odd...I was expecting something like a serial killer kind of thriller.
I did not like that the people involved in the disappearances of the girls were not held accountable. REALLY??!! It smacks dab of "let's see what we can get away with and just lie about everything". This was a definite turn off.
The book deals with betrayal, lies, family dysfunction, alcoholism, thoughts of suicide, and teenage pregnancy, along with infidelity, and gun violence.
In my opinion, this book is appropriate for ages 17 and older (due to mature content)
On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, I rate this a 5.

I did like the story but I didn't like the backwards thing...it sure was confusing. I don't want to think too hard while reading unless it's to figure out a plot :)
Thanks for the review. I may just pass this one up. So many others that are super good.
I'll pass on this one. I've heard a few others not liking it either and my book want to read is just too big to add one that doesn't seem to draw good reviews.
