A roller-coaster week of high humidity, our first heat wave (temps over 90 for 3 days in a row is a heat wave for eastern New York State), and then thunderstorms and lower temps. I'm liking the lower temps and I'm liking that it's Friday. That means it's the day some of us bloggers share our FIVE FAVE blessings from the past week and link up at our host's site: Susanne of Living to Tell the Story. - HIGH HEAT HIKE! Saturday was predicted to be a 90 degree day here in the Capital Region of New York but I was actually headed to Vermont where I was hoping/praying it wouldn't get higher than 88. It actually JUST got to 88 in the Green Mountains where I had planned a hike. My friend Gerri also wanted to go and volunteered to drive. (so I paid for her dinner after the hike!). We hiked a deep woods trail called Homer Stone Trail which is also a part of the Long Trail/Appalachian Trail. It was hot, humid by noon, but the entire hike except for a short piece (about .3 miles) was along the babbling brook. In fact we had to CROSS the brook with NO bridge and water was up to my knees at one point. But it felt great. We spent about 45 minutes eating lunch and drinking our water with our feet submerged in the icy mountain water and then crossed the creek, and started climbing. Yup. A pretty significant tough climb but it was so worth it as you can see by the lake pictures. The state of Vermont calls is Little Rock Pond but to a New Yorker, that is a lake, NOT a pond. It was absolutely stunning. Several hikers were there, some fishing and some just doing what we were doing: soaking hot tired feet. There's another approach to this lake and that's where most of the people were coming from. We were the only people on the trail up except for one younger couple whom we passed around lunch time. I'm very thankful I was able to hike in the beautiful Green Mountains of Vermont. (only about 1.5 hours east of where I live).
Quiet time on the deck Sunday morning 6 June |
- COFFEE AND MORNING SUN: Sunday was going to be another very hot and humid day so I went outside early to have coffee on the deck. I first read my morning Scriptures and devotional and then read the fiction book I borrowed from the library. It was super early (6:30) and very quiet. I loved and am thankful for every minute.
Our front flower bed: left to right: Peach roses, chives with purple irises behind them, day liles, large pink tea rose bush, and pink and white peony bushes |
Day lilies! |
- BLOOMS!! More flowers bloomed this past week...I honestly think with the day lilies blooming this early, it was due to the hot sunshine on our front yard all afternoon and early evening. I'm so thankful for these late Spring blooms! I love all the colors!
- AFTER WORK POWER WALK: I met my friend Gerri for an after work power walk yesterday. We both get out of work at 2:30 and I'm about a 35 minute drive away from where we were to meet. I got there around 3:15 and read for a bit in the wonderful sunshine as the high humidity broke over night and it was a wonderful 76 degrees. My fave kind of weather! She arrived around 3:40 and we hit the trail at this local nature preserve. We practically jogged in some places and really got our heart rates up. 2 miles and 50 min later we returned to the cars and went our separate ways. I'm thankful for friends who like to meet for my work out walks.
- COCKTAIL HOUR! My youngest daughter Claire had Wednesday off from work and decided to try to replicate a cocktail we enjoyed at her graduation dinner in NH. Well...let's just say that was a huge fail. It tasted AWFUL!! (we discovered we needed sweetened coconut water not unsweetened and thai basil not regular basil..oops...) so she dumped them and started over with a simple cosmos recipe. It was delicious and just the right amount of cranberry, orange and vodka/triple sec. So refreshing and she even added a lime slice garnish. I'm so thankful for tasty drinks before dinner made by the ballerina girl.
That wraps up my faves. What are you thankful for this week??
Whatever you have planned for the weekend, I hope you enjoy and relax!
HAPPY WEEKEND!

Hope this works...first time commenting from my phone.
Your hikes always inspire me. I much prefer hiking in NON humid weather. I hope you get good hiking weather this weekend.
Wow that sounds like a hard hike in those temps but yes the views make it worthwhile. I love the peace and quiet of an early morning but I'm usually still sleeping lol. I've never been a lover of cocktails - give me a glass of red wine any day lol. Your flowers look lovely. Have a good weekend.
That pond does look more like a lake. Glad you got some good hikes and walks in. Your flowers look great, and the quiet morning on the deck sounds ideal.
Wow! Love that last photo of Little Rock Pond! You do hike around the most gorgeous scenery!
Glad you are surrounded by such beauty - including your flowers! Enjoy your weekend.
Hi Faith. I love these Faves. I had to chuckle at the "Cocktail Fail" episode. So glad you were able to start over and get something you enjoyed more. That's great that Claire can make delicious cocktails! I love your hiking pictures. We had a super cool day here yesterday (only got up into the 60s) bur the heat will be on again today, and temps will be climbing until we are triple digits next week. I love your flower gardens. Have a great weekend. :-)
Coffee and books are the best way to start the day. I admire you for hiking in all that humidity! Our temps are going to be close to 100 this week, but it's a dry heat. Still exhausting, though.
The hike looks lovely. Whenever you mention your early morning coffee and devotional/fiction on the deck, I want to do the same. Except I don't because our deck is higher and a couple of the neighbors would have a great view of my early morning fashion. Don't want to scare them. Ha. We're in a heat warning right now. Yesterday was 100*F!! Unheard of for this time of year. I couldn't even bring myself to go walk the dog it was so hot.
