STORY SUMMARY
A woman whom Mike has never met before, named Amber Langstrom, shows up at his home one day with some information that is going to blow his world apart. She's a beautiful, damaged woman and she has a secret that links to Mike's past. She claims that her son Adam has been wrongfully convicted of being a sex offender. Now he has vanished from his brutal work camp which logs hard timber around the woods in the Widowmaker Ski Resort. She also claims that Adam is Mike's half brother...that his deceased father, Jack Bowditch, fathered Adam.
Mike has worked hard to forget many things from his troubled childhood and younger adult life and he really does not want to revisit the wild north country of his childhood home and confront again, his father's violent history. But Amber is desperate and Mike needs to know the truth which makes it hard for him to say no to Amber.
Mike begins the search for answers and travels to the mountainous wilderness to a place hidden from the world....a place where the military guards a top-secret interrogation base, where sexual predators live together in a backwoods colony after they are released from prison, and where self-styled vigilantes are willing to commit murder if they consider anyone their enemies.
Will Mike figure out where Adam is? And what happens to his girlfriend Stacy who is on a mission of her own involving moose?
MY THOUGHTS
This is one of the fastest paced books yet in this series. I read this in less than a week and I loved how the author continues to develop the main characters who are carried over into each book.
The books in this series can be read as stand alones but it's so much better when you read them in order.
I thought the plot was a bit depressing though in regards to the sex offenders being under the thumb of a manipulative man who just wants slave labor. I know in the real world that any one on the sexual offender registry does have a difficult time getting work if they are released from prison. But the topic is heavy and probably the heaviest plot I've read so far in this series. But still it was fast paced and there's a subplot involving a wolf that I just loved.
Over all, this is a good mystery set in the middle of a Maine winter. The depiction of the setting is exquisite. It makes me want to see Maine in the winter months.
In my opinion, this book is appropriate for ages 17 and older (due to some mature content/subject matter).
On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, I rate this a 9.

Sounds like a good one! I should see if our library out here has that series!
Looks like a great mystery series. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Other than your reviews I have not heard of this series. How many books are there?
