This book is non fiction and written by my aunt's husband's cousin's wife. Got that?!!
Seriously, she is co-owner with her husband of two Adirondack bed and breakfasts/Inns and a bar/grill in the High Peaks region of NYS. My oldest daughter and I stayed at the inn in Upper Jay, NY this past summer. I ended up buying her book because I liked the idea of a blessed home.
SUMMARY
This book is full of good advice for keeping a calm and orderly home and it begins with our thought life.
There is a lot of wisdom, Scriptures, and philosophical ideas in this book. It's not a Christian book but it does included Christian principles in places.
The book is divided into 4 main sections with several chapters in each part.
Part 1 = Home
- Where it all begins
- Getting Home Right
- Soul Questions
- Your True Home
- Culture Shock
- The Power of Remembering
- Learning to Listen
- Sacred Space (I enjoyed this one)
- Moving In
Part 2 = Cleansing
- Life Gets Messy
- Dust
- Critters
- Clutter
- Cosmetic
- Company
- Crisis
Part 3: Blessing
- Remembering Blessing
- Blessing Basics
- Blessing Defined
- Doing Better
- Listening
- Why Words Matter (a good one)
- Watch Your Mouth
- Unspoken Blessings
- Struggle and....blessing
- Blessing as a Lifestyle
- To the Next Generation
- Beyond Your Home
Part 4: Blessing Guide
- Simple Blessings
- Lifestyle blessings
- Special Situation blessings
- Room by Room Blessings (I found this odd)
- Home Blessing Ceremony
She also cites various resources and Scriptures in the back of the book.
My Thoughts
This was an ok book. I found it rather redundant and contrived but overall good content.
I did like what she had to say about our emotions and thought life, however and I found that to be spot on!
I found it to be less "Christian" than I was hoping for...I mean...just pray to God directly for crying out loud! You don't have to go room to room and say a special blessing "over" it. She does acknowledge at least that we have spiritual authority over demonic activity. I am very well aware of that and appreciate that she put this into the book. She also said we are the spiritual authorities over our home (well, Christ is but I know what she meant!)
I guess I've never struggled with keeping a calm and orderly home so maybe just couldn't relate to what she personally experienced.
I do know she has amazing accomodations in the Inn we stayed at this past summer. And the food in her restaurant was outstanding! Many plant-based options which is rare in the mountains of New York. She's also a very nice and down to earth person because Yes, I did get to meet her.
In my opinion, this book is appropriate for ages 14 and older.
On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, I rate this a 7.
