Book Review: One Wintry Night

As a family, we have a favorite book we like to put on the family room coffee table in the winter months. It was a Christmas gift from Grandma M----(my mother) to our oldest daughter in 1998, when she was 5 and my youngest had just been born! We read it every December now as a family, and both girls usually read it through at least once by them selves during the winter.
The book is "One Wintry Night" by Ruth Bell Graham. Illustrations are by Richard Jesse Watson. They are absolutely breathtaking. Ruth created this wonderful and unique version of the Christmas Story by blending a contemporary setting with the history of God's redeeming love. The genre is "a story within a story": Biblical history/truth within a fictitious setting. It is set in the mountains and from the description, it appears to be in the area where the Grahams have lived, in North Carolina.
A summary: a young mountain boy is outdoors, alone, when a sudden snowstorm comes upon him. He takes refuge in a cabin that his grandfather helped build many years before. The woman who lives there gives the boy shelter and food, and attends to his badly swollen ankle. They are housebound because of the blizzard so she spends the hours telling the Christmas story beginning with creation and ending with the resurrection.
This is a fascinating book for Believers who already know the story and for people who only know a few details. It is appropriate for ages 4-adult and is a picture book with chapters. It is a long story but....at our house, we read a chapter or two per night. It is one of our favorite traditions! I highly recommend this book for all families!

This looks like a good read--and appropriate for the season. I respect Ruth Bell Graham, although I've never read any of her books. Thanks for sharing! :~D
