It's American Idol nite tonight! Tuesday evenings are set aside for the girls and I to watch and laugh at the antics of Simon, Randy and Paula. We love this show. At first I was kinda against it. Until I realized that this is one thing that the girls, especially my teen, really like to do with me. They take showers right after dinner (which isn't hard as we eat late on Tuesdays as Claire has ballet class from 5-6 pm), and get into cozy pj's and fleece blankets and curl up on the couches together. They take turns sitting with me on the big couch. Each person gets the loveseat to themselves at least once a week. Tonite it is Claire's turn for the loveseat. Our family room tends to be cold in winter....it has the sliding glass doors that open to the deck and in the winter, even with thermal drapes on the doors, it is cold! So, I make hot tea for me and sometimes hot cocoa for them although we don't tend to snack on school nites. It depends on the weather. Tonite they will have a choice of hot cocoa or popcorn while watching. We don't have cable and my children do not watch tv after dinner, before bed, on school nites. Until the last season of American Idol. There was a singer on there (remember Melinda??!) who is a Christian and we really wanted her to win. She was so good that I started letting Courtney watch it. Then during the finals we started allowing Claire to watch. She doesn't need as much sleep as Courtney so getting to bed at 9 pm on a school nite isn't as detrimental for her as it would have been for Courtney at that age! Of course with Courtney being a teen, her bedtime is 10 pm so watching it isn't a problem for her. One thing we don't allow her to do is skip her small group Bible study (life::groups) on Wednesday evenings. She is in a group for youth group, with 4 other freshmen girls. 2 girls are homeschooled and 3 are at the high school. The leader is a good friend of ours whom we met when we first joined this church. Many of the girls in the group love American Idol so I tape it for them to watch later in the week. Why am I writing about American Idol? Well, because it beats going up stairs and vacuuming the living room! (yeah, I am still on my "why bother to do housework" kick!) but hey...last nite I did a load of laundry while Claire was at drama rehearsal, and right after work today I did the food shopping as we are expecting a major snowstorm later tonite. So....time to go make sure the kids are doing their chores and homework and time for me to dig the vacuum out of the closet....even though around our house today...I really don't feel like it. American Idol can't come too soon!
Do you watch American Idol? If so, why? If not, why not??

I like American Idol for the most part. I didn't like last season too much though.
Some friends and I actually went to Washington, DC..in 2006 to see American Idol in concert. It was when Chris Daughtry was on tour. It was great!! Lots of fun with the girls.
I love how you are so disciplined with your girls. That is wonderful that you stay so structured with them. Around our house...it's hard for me to keep a constant structure going all the time. We always seem to get off the beaten path somehow.
I hope you enjoyed your evening of American Idol, Hot cocoa and spending quality time with your girls!!
Jennifer: thanks for visiting! Yes we had a great time last nite although it wasn't as great as other nites. I think the singers from last year (the final 10) are gonna be way better than this year's crop. Oh well. We had fun anyways!
As for structure....hoo boy...I am like anal when it comes to structure but...I have learned to also be flexible because with kids...well..you know! I do like to stick to routines though once they come home from school. Mainly, because of the personality of my youngest: she really needs routines. She tends to fall apart when the daily routine is upset. She is getting better and she is not a perfectionist like her oldest sister but for some reason she really needs the same routines, traditions and structure I try to provide. Especially on school days. I think in some ways it brings her a sense of security. she has always been in "daycare" since 8 months old...it was only for 2 days a week, but when she was born we were heavily involved in ministry at our former church and I think her wanting structure now is a result of that. does that make sense? I don't want you to think I am super-mom! far from it. I just like to stick to our routines for a peaceful home life. Sorry this is long!
Hi Faith
my internet reception keeps dropping out, so trying again...i don't think i'm doubling up :)
just wanted to say Myles loves american idol..they haven't showed it on australian tv since I think Fantasia(?) won. But we are behind you so will have to skip any future idol updates :) We're still in the audition rounds.
Sounds like a great way to spend the evening with your girls.
You're funny. You can't avoid that vacuum forever! LOL.
We are fans of American and Canadian Idol and watch faithfully, although I've quit watching the city auditions. You might like to read the book "Mandissa-Idol Eyes". She was on a couple seasons ago and is a Christian and very Godly example. Simon really insulted her about her weight behind her back and she responded by forgiving him in Jesus' name even thought the producers were egging her on to let Simon have it. Made Randy and Paula's jaw drop and Simon speechless. Very interesting behind the scenes stuff and great content about what true beauty is. If you look on my sidebar there's a link to my book reviews. It'll be in 2007 reviews.
Hi Susanne: thanks! I know my oldest would love to read that! As would I. we really liked Melinda last year, too. I believe she was also a Christian. sometimes Simon can be so mean, can't he??
And guess what? I'm vacuuming today!! (it sure does help to have school closed due to our ice storm..we ended up just getting about 3 inches of snow..the ice was worse)
Once in a great while when I sit down to check whats on I run across it. I don't watch it regularly, but my daughter and her girls watch a lot of it. I see it coming out when we get together to sing as a family, my daughter has looked over at me and said... she watches American Idol. ha
