kayaking on Moreau Lake, foothills of the eastern ADKS 3 August 2014 |
So yesterday, my neighbor and good friend, M, and I took my and my husband's kayaks up to the lake we like to frequent for an afternoon of paddling and admiring nature.
While we were paddling, we chatted.....but we were also quiet at many moments just taking in God's handiwork.
It reminded me of how we see His glory in nature...all around us really. And sometimes we forget that in our daily busyness. I know of families who go on vacation and all they do is keep busy. There's no relaxing in that!! I think many people today are afraid of being still. Of just being one with nature....of just sitting....or gliding on a calm lake. I think we often forget that God's glory is found in the things He created.....the pristine waters of an unspoiled lake where no motors are allowed....the haunting cry of the loon....the quack and splash of the duck.......the laughter of children.........the rustling of the marsh grasses as the boat glides through.....the sparkling sun on blue water......the gentle wind blowing over and around us, cooling hot sun-soaked shoulders.....and while I was thinking all of this, Psalm 8 came to my mind as I paddled all over the lake, especially verse 3.
We are so small, as humans, compared to the rest of creation......and definitely small compared to God! How can God care for us, when we are full of sin and so insignificant on this earth?
And yet He does care...He cares for us and the Scriptures tell us that He created people to be a "little lower than the angels" and that He crowns us with "glory and honor". And....He loves us....so He sent His beloved Son to die in our place.....so that we could have eternal life with Him!
God's world is important......because it's His handiwork...but we are more important than creation all around us.......
And we get to take care of it! We get to enjoy it...........
It speaks of the glory of God if we but look............
.............and listen...............
and learn.............

What a great post! I am afraid I am one who tends to get "too busy" and think that I must constantly be doing something! I need to work on "being still" and enjoy the peace and goodness of God all around. Thank your for this post.
Good thoughts, Faith!
I love this post! I just think I would be scared to Kayak, I won't even get in a CANOE :( ask mom, she traumatized me as a kid ha ha!
Great post Faith. You painted a beautiful picture of God's creation.
Love, love, love this post, Faith. I'm like you and find God presence so much in nature. I think kayaking would be a wonderful place to experience that stillness and just be in God's presence!
