New (School) Year Faves

I cannot believe how fast this week went by!  I have to confess I'm thankful it's Friday because from last Friday until today, my life has been crazy busy!

I'm taking a break today to share FIVE of my FAVE things from the past week and then linking up with other like-minded bloggers over at Susanne's site.  She's been hosting this gratitude meme for several years and I love participating as it slows me down and has me say "Thank You, God"!

  • HIGH PEAK HIKE!  Last Friday morning, my long time childhood friend and hiking buddy  Cheryl B, and I woke up (she had spent the night) at 4:30 am to leave the house at 5: 45 am and arrive at 8:30 to the trailhead for the 36th highest peak in New York State.  This was my 2nd time climbing Cascade Mt and Cheryl's very first high peak (I've climbed 3, this one twice). What a glorious day.  The weather was perfect.  On top it was only 48 degrees so I froze because I only had hiking shorts on and a thin jacket with my wick-away shirt.  The summit has 4 levels and I only stayed about a minute on the very top.  I spent most of my time on the 3rd level (see pic above). It's a kick-butt trail in some spots and very popular. I'm sharing five of my fave photos from the hike. I'm thankful for long-time friends and amazing mountain hikes.
Sunday morning peace

  • SUNDAY MORNING!  Sunday morning, Dave and I were up rather early so he watched the sermon online while I had my Bible time on the deck. We each wanted our "alone" time. (this weekend we open up to the public for in-person services!!  So excited to gather with more than 40 people again!)  We ate breakfast out there and it was very peaceful. I ended up spending about 2 hours on my deck with my reading for pleasure book, my Bible and my devotional.  It was such a nice morning and not hot! I'm thankful for my wildflowers, deck, and a relaxing morning having coffee with my husband.

and my fave part of the red loop trail
total hike is only 1 mile on the this trail.

  • LABOR DAY LOCAL HIKE!  Dave and I were trying to decide if we should kayak or hike.  I opted for both.  He then wasn't feeling great (allergies) so he decided to stay at home and relax with a book, while I went for a local hike in the late afternoon.  It was pleasant and I did see other hikers but for most of the trail I was by my self.  It was a great way to end the long weekend and ease into the new year.  I'm thankful we have so many local preserves for when I don't want to drive up to the mountains!
totally plant-based rice and beans
  • DAVE's DINNER!  Dave offered to make dinner on Sunday evening and it was so good! It wasn't as spicy as when he makes it for when Claire is home (she's our youngest who's away at UNH).  It was perfect and chock full of two different kinds of peppers, onions, garlic, spices, black beans and the brown rice.  I'm always thankful when he cooks!

Play Centers using Resources Natural materials
  • NATURE-BASED PLAY!  Last winter I placed an order at work for Resources Natural Play materials. We order from a catalog geared towards prek and it's very expensive so I didn't think this item would get approved by our director.  I was wrong! She ordered it and I opened it for the first time on Wednesday, our first day with new students.  Two children in particular took right away to it.  Click on the link to see why this open-ended way to play excites me.  One boy even said "water" for the blue piece which is what it's meant to symbolize. It's a bit higher level for our children with special needs but the items did elicit a lot of language from them as well as some amazing problem solving skills and creativity. I'm thankful for awesome directors who encourage me to bring a nature-based approach to the classroom and for a great start to the new school year!

That wraps up my week.

I hope you all have a restful weekend doing some things you love.

I plan on getting a lot of housework done, and then visiting with some old friends on Sunday.

HAPPY WEEKEND!!

That is quite a hike. It must have been so beautiful up there. It’s the best when students connect with something we’ve offered them. We work so hard to make that happen.

That view on your hike looks magnificent. I am soaking up as much porch time as I can each morning. It's my favorite place to start my day. After this week's snow, we're looking at warmer temperatures next week, but the snow was a reminder of what's ahead. It's always nice when someone else does the cooking:)

Hi Faith- I love this post and all the pictures of your hikes. So glad you had a good week. That dinner your husband made looks really good. Hope you have a good week coming up!

It must be so lovely to get out and do those hikes after a busy week. Yes food always tastes better when you haven’t had to cook it. Always nice to get new resources for the kids too. Have a good weekend.

That is some serious hiking. I've never done a hike with that kind of difficulty. I don't think my knees or courage could take it. LOL. Sure is beautiful in your pictures though. How nice to have a dinner made for you! My hubby is more of a breakfast cook. That looks like a fun builder set for the kids. My dayhome kids love that kind of stuff. Your deck is so cozy and inviting.

Oh I can't wait for my daughter and granddaughter to heal enough that we can all get out and hike some of the easier trails around here.
It is always a blessing when someone else cooks. The Prof makes great meals!
Hurray for quiet mornings on the deck with coffee.
Have a great week!
