2021 Book Review #22: Dusk, Night, Dawn

Another good book by one of my fave Christian authors.

SUMMARY

This is a non-fiction book that the author wrote during the pandemic of 2020.

In true Anne style, this book contains tears and laughter, angst and peace, prayers and pathos, hope and faith.  It's a book about revival.  It speaks of courage.  It speaks of her life and her thoughts and her victories and we glimpse a bit more of her mind as she takes us through the pages.

I've always loved the brutal honest bluntness of her writing.  I love how she bares her soul about her alcoholism and her life.  I didn't know she had gotten married and that was cool and fun to read about!! I also learned a little bit more about her upbringing/parents.  She's a fascinating person!

The book is set up in 9 different parts with a prologue and a coda.  I find it interesting that she uses the word "coda" as that's typically a word used for music.  Perhaps that is what this book really is:  a fine symphony of words and ideas.  Of course I laughed out loud of her descriptions about our "leader" of this nation during the pandemic.  She's just so funny!  and at the same time, her writing is profound and deep in soulful kind of way.  Like a good piece of music.

She's crass at times and I'm not a fan of her use of the "f" word or certain other vulgar phrases ( i just think they're low class) but they are few and far between so I can easily overlook them.  She speaks from her heart. And our hearts are not perfect, are they?

The different sections are:

  • Prologue: Ribbons
  • One: Soul Lather (loved this!)
  • Two: The Kitten
  • Three: Repentability (loved this!)
  • Four: Snail Hymn
  • Five: Lunch-Money Faith (loved this too!)
  • Six: Light Breezes (sooo good!)
  • Seven:  Can You Love Me Now?  (loved this)
  • Eight:  Four Night, Three Days (funny!!)
  • Nine: One-Winged Love (deep and loved it)
  • Coda:  Big Heart ( a great wrap up)
Some quotes really resonated with me:

"Forgiveness, I know now, is maturity.  Mercy is maturity.  It's slow release, like certain medicines.  It's incremental, like traveling along the spiral chambers of a nautilus." (pg 82 Dusk, Night, Dawn by Anne Lamott, c. 2021)

"Sin is not just affairs, or porn shops, or drug cartels.  It is also the ignorance and brokenness of the world, extreme self-centeredness, hoarding wealth, using others as objects, not caring." (pg 83)

"Sometimes the movement of grace looks like letting other people go first" (pg160)

"Love is giving away what you have been so freely given....." (pg 184)

In my opinion, this book is appropriate for ages 17 and older

On a scale of 1-10, I rate this an 8.

I've never read her books but I do like some of those quotes.
