Mid-January Faves

Well, this month usually seems so slow to me because it's usually so gloomy and snowy here in eastern NY.  We don't have snow yet.....just lots of gloomy, drizzly weather with bursts of sunshine some days.  Temps are warmer than usual and although I'm ok with that as I still commute to work, I do miss the good old fashioned days of winter with snow for the  students to play in. It's a little more than half-way through the month and half-way through Winter so we still have the chance to get some white stuff.

and this morning I have yet another 2 hour delay due to ice........

Meanwhile, let's pause in our daily lives and think on the blessings we've received this past week.  I'm sharing FIVE of those blessings that make my FAVES list and then I link up with other bloggers  over at Susanne's site. How about joining us?

FIVE FAVES

vegan masala dosai
  • DATE NIGHT! Friday evening was date night for Dave and I.  We decided to finally try the pricy but oh so authentic Indian restaurant about 2 miles from our home. We've had food at a party from there before but had never eaten inside the place. It was charming....busy...but lots of room....excellent wait staff.  The menu has all kinds of authentic Indian and Indo-Chinese food.  It's fantastic. There's even an entire vegan section. I ordered the masala dosai. Oh my gosh look at how long that crepe is.  It was filled (only half way though) with the dosai which is a potato, carrots, onion, peas kind of dish with all  kinds of spices and came with 3 different dipping sauces.  One I really liked (the lentil one) and the other 2 were a bit too spicy for me. The crepe is actually made from rice flour so even gluten free people can enjoy it. For an appetizer, we shared the veggie samosas.  Dave ordered a very spicy dish...I can't remember the name of it but it was new to us. I'm thankful we had a fun evening out trying new foods.

  • MOVIE NIGHT: Saturday evening Dave and I were both tired.....I was still nursing the head cold I had all last week and he was just worn out from dealing with a wifi issue (hardware) in the basement all day. So for dinner, we decided on homemade pizza and salad and sat in the family room to watch the above movie on Netflix.  We both love the acting ability of Leonardo and had heard good things about this flick. It's about Howard Hughes and his downward spiral after all his success due to his mental illness of OCD among other things. I'm thankful we saw this movie together. It's excellent all around...a wonderful period piece. We really like movies set in the 1930s-1940s.

  • MOTHER DAUGHTER DATE: Courtney (our oldest daughter) invited me over to her apartment for Sunday afternoon after church to finish up Season 2 of the above series. We both loved the novels this series is based on and although the producers have strayed quite far from the book, we enjoy watching E Moss in this series. She is one phenomenal actress  to play in this dystopian series. We will begin Season 3 in a couple of weeks. Our goal is to finish this series by the end of the calendar year but winter is really when we watch movies/Hulu/Netflix so we shall see how far we get. I'm thankful for yummy snacks and time spent with my oldest girl. It made for a nice Sunday afternoon.

  • COMPLETED!  I had three 2 hour online trainings to  complete for New York State Early Childhood Education special educators. Completion is due by April 1st as that is when our agency is up for licensure renewal.  However, I decided to complete all 3 trainings within this past week.  Mandated Reporter training has changed considerably since I first became a teacher so that one was very interesting, informative and important.  The other two (Adverse Childhood Traumas and Abusive Head Injuries/Head Trauma/Shaken Baby Syndrome) are classes I can teach but the review is always good to have.  These three trainings are required for us to complete every two years. I"m thankful I have them completed and the certificates uploaded and sent to the correct people/departments.

  • DELAYS AND DEPARTURES:  Wednesday morning the PreK where I teach had a 2 hour delay due to freezing rain results from the night before. I work on the east side of the Hudson River and although all of the public and private schools near where I live and in the county were running on time, the agency I work for decided to delay our Troy site due to that county having very slick roads. And because we were considered just a half day, only 5 out of our 12 students came which means I had time to do some February planning and set-ups. Then yesterday, we were allowed to depart the school 1 hour early due to sleet and a wintry mix of snow/freezing rain coming down. I'm thankful for a director who uses wisdom in her decisions to delay or allow early departures.

That wraps up my faves. I hope you have a great weekend!!

Hi Faith. It so weird that you haven't had much snow back there and we have been dumped on (especially in the mountains). I am glad you work for an agency that cares about the safety of students and employees and has give you start delays during icy weather. The restaurant you went to sounds interesting - probably a little too spicy for me. So glad you could spend quality time with both your husband and Courtney this week. It's always good to get training over with. Good for you! I hope you have a good weekend. See you again soon!

Well done on getting the training done, especially well in advance of the deadline - one less thing to have to worry about. Glad that your director is sensible about opening/closing during difficult weather conditions. It has been very cold here but we haven't had snow. I also enjoyed reading The Handmaid's Tale but haven't got very far with watching it on TV so far. I need to make time for that. Always good when you try out a new restaurant and it turns out ok. Have a good weekend Faith.

What a wonderful week you have had, special, fun time with hubby and daughter, plus being so savvy to work ahead on your training. Having some delays and early closures too, I’d say you are feeling quite satisfied and happy fir the new weekend! Bod bless you, my friend!

We've had an unusually snowy January this year.
I read The Handmaid's Tale years ago, but haven't seen the movie. It was a bit on the creepy side for me! haha
This is such a great time of year for getting into new shows and movies. We've enjoyed a few in the last week. The Glass Onion was really good!

Have a great weekend, Faith.

I was amazed to read that you didn't have snow! I grew up near Albany and Schenectady and we had snow on the ground from Thanksgiving to March. The climate is indeed strange lately.

I haven't seen any recent Leonardo DiCaprio movies. He is a good actor and can play such a range of characters. He reminds me of Johnny Depp with his acting range.

I've never had Indian food. I need to try it sometime. I've been tinkering with the Mediterranean diet. It might be similar.

Driving icy roads sounds scary. I'd rather drive in snow than ice. I'm glad that your school uses wisdom with their schedule.

Congrats on completing your Early Childhood Education course. I remember taking a college course called Early Childhood Development when I was considering going for my RN. I took it as a mother of 3 children now grown or in their teens and several times, I wanted to stand and disagree with the professor. LOL

Have a great weekend.

We have had less snow SO FAR this winter. Even today's snow melted as it reached the ground so we had no accumulation. Weather is certainly a funny thing.
Good for you finishing all those mandated trainings (I don't miss those days...)
Love your quiet movie watching times with Dave and Courtney.
Have a good weekend!

Your dates with husband and daughter and movies sound fun. My d-i-l is Indian, and all the family likes Indian food except me. I've grown to be able to handle a few things, though.

Good for you for completing the training courses you needed, and ahead of schedule.

It's nice to have some late starts and early closings so as to have a little more free time. I'd rather have snow than ice and freezing rain, but we have to take what we get. Stay safe.

I love Indian food. But I usually get a meat dish. I may have to be bold and give something like that crepe a try. It sounds delicious. That movie has never drawn my attention but I may have to look for it on Netflix. Nice that you and Courtney have these times of enjoying something to watch together. I wish my kids lived in town that we could do that. But sometimes when my oldest comes to visit we do a Anne of Green Gables marathon together. Good for you for completing the trainings.
