2024 Book Review #2: Overcoming Every Problem

This is a wonderful little book by a well known Christian author and speaker. I've been to one of her conferences and she is an excellent and eloquent speaker on fire for God and His Word.

BOOK SUMMARY

This book reads like a devotional book.  I found it at our local Christian bookstore and it was perfect for meditative Scriptures for my women's walking group.  We would read one of the Scriptures, meditate on it, or journal about it, and then walk and share our thoughts.

The book is divided into 40 chapters, with each chapter highlighting a promise from God/Scripture.  The overall theme is how God's Word strengthens us through life's greatest challenges.

After a short introduction, the chapters are as follows:

  1. God's Word teaches Truth
  2. God's Word is life, healing, and health to all who find it
  3. God's Word heals and delivers
  4. God's Word protects us
  5. Meditating on God's word brings wisdom, prosperity, and success
  6. God's Word brings stability, fruitfulness, and prosperity
  7. God's Word upholds, guides, maintains, and propels the universe
  8. God's Word has the power to create
  9. God's Word brings blessing to those who order their conduct and conversation according to it
  10. God's Word cleanses and purifies
The other 30 chapters also begin with "God's Word..."

  1. reduces our capacity to sin and strengthens us against temptation
  2. renews and revives us
  3. enables us to walk at liberty and at ease
  4. is filled with promises of His mercy and grace
  5. gives us good judgement, wise and right discernment, and knowledge
  6. is better than thousands of gold and silver pieces
  7. makes us wiser than our enemies
  8. gives us light and shows us how to live
  9. accomplishes God's purpose
  10. gives us hope
  11. brings light and dispels darkness
  12. brings direction and shows us what to do
  13. Jesus is the Word
  14. implanted in our hearts, has the power to save our souls
  15. strengthens us
  16. melts a hard heart
  17. often brings persecution
  18. transforms us into His image
  19. is a weapon against the devil, and it is armor that protects us in warfare
  20. renews our mind
  21. destroys mental strongholds and teaches us the truth
  22. divides soul and spirit
  23. comforts and consoles us
  24. helps us see the error of our ways and turn in God's direction
  25. causes us to have joy even in the midst of our trouble and anguish
  26. gives us great peace
  27. abiding in our hearts makes us victorious over the evil one
  28. We are born again by God's living and enduring Word
  29. is good news, and it endures forever
  30. Contains self-fulfilling power
There is also a conclusion and a notes section.
Everything Joyce writes is based on Scripture and she includes anecdotal recordings of her own life or of friends.

My THOUGHTS

When I first bought the book and glanced through the various chapters, I was  concerned when I saw the words "prosperity" and "Success".  BUT, she does an excellent job at explaining that this does not necessarily mean financial/material wealth and personal success.  It means emotional/spiritual.  I was much relieved because sadly, the prosperity message that is still running rampant in this nation among certain Christian groups, has done much damage.  Of course some people take it a different way and live a poverty mentality which is also not scriptural.

I was most impressed with how the author uses not just New Testament Scriptures but also Old Testament Scriptures and they all tied in together in each separate chapter.

My fave chapters were numbers 2-4; 21-25; 31, 33, and the last five (35-40).  I did a lot of highlighting of her words/thoughts and the various Scriptures she used in each chapter.

I loved that the chapter would also have one key Scripture...kind of like the main point Scripture.

This is a good personal devotional book that I will keep and refer to often particularly as a supplemental source for small groups that I help lead or facilitate.

In my opinion, this book is appropriate for ages 12 and older.

On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, I rate this a 10.

Can't go wrong with a book recommendation that is 10 out of 10!:) I like the titles of the chapters...intriguing, for sure. I hope that your walking group is still going strong. Such a great idea - accountability for walking AND discussing scripture!

You still have a local Christian bookstore? What a blessing! I sure miss ours. Browsing all the books I always purchased something. It's not quite the same now doing it online. Anyway, this does sound like a good one. I've read a few Joyce Meyer.
