Saturday Nine

I'm participating in the Saturday Nine meme. You can join in by linking up over here.  I love Elton John...ever since my teen years and first hearing this song, so of course I had to play along!

Saturday 9: Rocket Man (1972)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Elton John tells us he's taking off for outer space at 9:00 AM. What will you be doing at 9:00 AM tomorrow morning? Probably just getting out of the shower and getting ready for church after coffee and some breakfast. Unless we go to the 9 Am service, in which case I'll be at church!

2) He sings that even though he uses it for his astronaut job, he doesn't understand science. Was science one of your better classes in school? absolutely not. I barely made it through the required 9th grade Earth Science class (the teacher was horrible and it was so dull) and I only took a couple weeks of biology, found out I didn't need it for Music Education in College so dropped it to take a Musical Theatre class.

3) Lyricist Bernie Taupin recalls writing the first verse of "Rocket Man" while stuck in traffic as he tried to make his way to his parents' home. Have you recently been stuck in traffic? If yes, where were you headed? Yes, we  were on our way to Plymouth County MA last Sunday after church and were stuck in Mass Pike traffic near Worester.  We were headed to Dave's childhood hometown to visit his aging parents.

4) Thinking of cars ... Nigel Olsson, who plays drums and sings back-up on "Rocket Man," is a self-proclaimed "race car fanatic." What hobby are you passionate about? If you have to ask this, you are definitely new to my blog.  Hiking and everything Adirondacks of course!  Another hobby I love and am passionate about is reading good books and collecting mugs from new places we visit. I'm also passionate about the various hiking challenges. And of course I'm passionate about worship music, classical music, and ballets.

5) Davey Johnstone, who plays guitar on "Rocket Man," recently posted on Facebook that he was thrilled to meet Joni Mitchell. Are you on Facebook? Instagram? Twitter? Pinterest? Tik Tok? I go on Pintrest every once in awhile to get haircut trends and clothing trends.  I post on Facebook (although not as often...mostly hiking or nature pics and family events) and I do post meditative thoughts or Scriptures on Instagram. I have absolutely no interest in Tik Tok and think it should be banned.  And Twitter? um. no thanks. Too many other great things to do.

6) Elton John once played charades with Bob Dylan. But only once. Elton laughingly says he can't get over how "hopeless" Dylan was at the game. What's the last game you played? Did you win?  Hm...I think the last game we played was Generation Gap at Thanksgiving.  My team won one and lost one.

7) In 1972, when this song was popular, Winnie the Pooh was on the cover the Sears Christmas Wish Book. That year, kids asked Santa for plush Pooh, Tigger and Eeyore. Did you have many plush toys as a child? If yes, do you still have any of them? We didn't have a lot of stuffed toys as children.  I do remember my beloved plush panda.  and in college I had a unicorn. I no longer have those! I do have an Adirondack black bear that my husband bought me when our youngest daughter was about 8 and we were all at an amusement park.

8) Also in 1972, TV cowboy Dan Blocker died. He played the middle brother, "Hoss," on Bonanza. Do you enjoy watching westerns? there was a time I watched Bonanza with my daddy when I was in like 5th grade-7th grade...for some reason I had a huge crush on Michael Landon. There was another western too with Barbara Stanwyck ....The Big Valley.  My sisters and I loved that for awhile. But I'm really not into westerns nor is my husband.

9) Random question: What inspires you? The writings of Maya Angelou, Barak Obama, and Luke in the New Testament. Other things that inspire me: a sunrise in the mountains, listening to any of Beethovens first 6 symphonies, nature quotes from Thoreau and Emerson,  and reading Les Miserables.

#1: My church has its service at 10:00, so I should be up and in the shower at 9:00 ... except we still have the Zoom option and I admit some weeks I sleep in and take advantage of it.
#8: While I don't recall it firsthand, my mom said Michael Landon was my first crush. She told me that when I was in pre-school, she gave me my bath during Bonanza because I cried whenever anyone punched Little Joe, and he was forever getting punched.

I liked The Big Valley too, because there were women in it. Bonanza was all about guys, which was fine, but I liked to see some women sometimes in the shows.

You didn't like Beethoven's last 3 symphonies? My favorite is his 8th (though the 9th is pretty spectacular)

Hi Faith. This was a fun post. Tonight's plans fell apart, so I am taking the opportunity to read a few blogs. Our church starts at 9 a.m., so I will be there then. My mom liked to watch Bonanza because of Michael Landon. Me not so much. I wasn't that good at science either - or math. I hope you have a great Sunday. See you again soon!
