Several people have asked me why I no longer write and edit Child's Play, a newsletter for parents of children ages birth thru 6. Well, one reason was because my second (and last) child came along and I became much busier. I was also volunteering in the elementary classroom of both my children and working part time as a parenting instructor at a nonprofit, faith-based center. So....I had to stop producing the newsletter. HOWEVER: this space will be used for things relating to children preschool through age preteen (ages 3- 12). If you ever have questions or concerns, particularly in the area of early child development (prenatal through age 6) or reading and writing/language arts for those ages, please feel free to contact me via the comments link.
For today I must keep this brief so am just listing a book that is a wonderful read for middle elementary children. It is on the reading level of grade 5 and content is appropriate for grades 2-6. Even older children would like this book and could read it in one evening if they had time!
Title: "If Wishes Were Horses" by Natalie Kinsey-Warnock. Natalie grew up on a dairy farm in Vermont and this book was inspired by many family stories. She actually did a writers workshop in our school district and my oldest daughter had the pleasure of working with her and was able to get her to sign her books.
The book takes place in Vermont, 1932. The main character is Lily, a 12 year old girl and centers around various happenings in her family/extended family. The author really did have a cousin with polio and another relative was a missionary to Pakistan. The horse in the story is based on one of the horses that Natalie rescued.
The main theme of the book is: family ties and the hard choices life often throws in our path.
ENJOY!
