Today is considered "National Day of Prayer" across our nation. More than ever we need to pray and uplift our state leaders, national leaders and our teachers, social workers and other people in the "helps" professions. Many tragedies have taken place recently here in our region, state and across the nation. Very sad. People are lost without God. We need to keep our leaders and community workers in our daily prayers; they are faced with a ream of social and moral issues that seem to overwhelm our communities. I am happy that my children go off to school each day and are able to learn from excellent teachers (for the most part!) and can shine the Light of the Lord in their own social/educational situations. Let us not take advantage of the freedom we have in this country. My children respect their teachers and church leaders, yet know also that sometimes what is right for one person might not be right for another. My children are learning that in the "moment of silence" time in their public schools that not all the kids or teachers are praying to God. Some are praying to other gods of their own religion. They are being taught by my husband and I that they need to respect other peoples' beliefs but they do not need to embrace those beliefs. And that they can take a stand without fear, for their own beliefs as well.
While we are praying today let's remember that yesterday was Teacher Appreciation Day. Teachers especially have a difficult role to play as often we need to be more than educators. We often need to be social workers, family care liasons, nurturers and child advocates. Not only do we need to teach the academics but sometimes personal hygiene, values such as honesty, kindness, tolerance, respect, anti-bullying, etc. Some of these things should be taught by the parent(s) at home, but sadly, most families are not concentrating on these things. SO...
Pray today. It doesn't matter what church you are a member of. It does not matter if you are Protestant or Catholic or Charismatic or Evangelical. PRAY! We have one God. He sees us, He knows who our next leaders will be and He knows just what we need right now.
