I am making my way through "Becoming a Woman of Prayer" by Cynthia Heald and am in chapter 6 which is about when God is silent. I like this quote from Philip Yancey that appears on pg. 49 (It is taken from his book "Disappointment with God"c.1988) He states "we may experience times of unusual closeness, when every prayer is answered in an obvious way and God seems intimate and caring. And we may also experience "fog times" when God stays silent, when nothing works according to formula and all the Bible's promises seem glaringly false. Fidelity involves learning to trust that, out beyond the perimeter of fog, God still reigns and has not abandoned us, no matter how it appears."
How do we react to this silence? One thing that I try to remember is that I do not know the mind of God, I do not know what He might have in store for me, at times. But I can know that He is still Sovreign and Mighty and He keeps me in the palm of His Hand. There also might be some sin that I need to deal with by going to the cross, leaving it there, repenting and asking for cleansing.
Once I finish this book, I will post some thoughts of what the Lord has shown me throughout this study. I do recommend this book and I might check out the other books in this series.
