Treasuring a Tradition

I cannot believe it is the weekend already!

This week has been one of my busiest since school began.

Decorating began, and the tree is up as of this evening. The outside lights are up and the candles are in the window. Most of my shopping was done online so that is done....just some small things to get for friends and the grandparents now.

Dave and I attended his company party last evening and had a blast. We have another party to attend tomorrow evening with our youngest daughter and next weekend we have a 3rd party for all youth group volunteers. (adults only!!)

And....here it is: close to St. Nicholas Day.
Some of you have read my story about how and why we celebrate St. Nicholas. For those of you who are new to this blog, you can read about this tradition
here.

I was surprised that my 16 year old still wants to carry on the tradition of putting her wooden Dutch shoes by the door. How fun!! So...I bought the goodies for the shoes.....and am treasuring these traditions.

I am realizing just how very fast time does fly: she has 6 more months until she is in her last year of high school! She is learning to drive. She is beginning to date. Wow...it is just so exciting and yet.....a part of me wants to keep her close to me and not let go.

I think this is why I am so excited that she still wants to celebrate St Nick day. It is something we have done since she was 6 years old and was first given the wooden shoes from her grandparents. It is a tradition that we have thoroughly enjoyed every December.

I treasure the sparkle in their eyes when they see their wooden shoes filled with the gold "coins" and other special candies. I treasure the hugs from the girls as they come flying in to the kitchen to say "thank you". I treasure it when I see them reading the book we have shared the last few years. (they no longer want me to read it to them, though!).

I treasure that they know the real meaning of Christmas and have a heart of compassion for children around the world who might not have a Christmas.

What are you treasuring this week??

Do you celebrate St. Nicholas Day?

Very sweet post. I remember those feelings well with my oldest and am now going through them again with my son. He graduates in June and it has just come too fast. He seems so grown up this year, in height and maturity.

We don't celebrate St. Nicholas Day. But we have other traditions and it warms my heart when my kids still want to do them even though they are grown.
