February Fave Fives 2

Wow...it's been bitter cold here in the Capital Region of New York for almost the entire week.  The night time temps have been downright frigid and in the single digits.  My back is feeling a bit better from the shoveling incident from last week's snow storm.....I am hoping to convince my husband we should invest in a snowblower now that we are middle-aged......lol....I don't mind shoveling but last week's was hard on my lower back!  But..we made it through this week with all 5 days of school and no more snowfall....yeah!!
And during this past week, I am finding that sometimes it's just the simple things that end up being on my "faves list".  Here are my five for the week:

  • THOUGHT- PROVOKING MOVIES:  my oldest daughter is taking a class at her high school called Film Criticism. She has to watch movies each weekend.  They analyze them, etc in class and they'll watch certain ones during class time.  This past weekend she could choose but had no idea what to borrow from the library.  So I chose Silas Marner because it was one of my fave required readings in high school.  I know not many people like this George Elliot novel (remember....George was really a woman!!) but I really loved the story!  The movie was very good.  But the better movie  was Schindlers List.  This was my daughter's first time with it.....I had suggested it and since it was on the list of movies to be discussed in class, we wanted her to see it with us, first.  I had forgotten how horrifically realistic it was. It was special to my husband and I to share this movie with Courtney (and yes, since it's rated R, Claire was in the basement playroom watching a movie for her age!)

  • EXCITING EMAIL!   We received an email this week from this place stating that Courtney was accepted as a Graphic Design Major!!  She had already been accepted by the college back in late October and with her preferred scholar status, once she turned in her art portfolio, etc., the dept would let her know within a 2 week time frame.  She mailed in all the stuff 3 Saturdays ago, and has been waiting patiently to see if she can major in Art. We did lots of praying, too! Well, it was just 2 days over 2 weeks.....she is one happy teenager.  Her plan is to major in Graphic Design with a minor in Math.  We are so happy for her!

  •  SPECIAL SOAP AND STUDY BOOK!  This book was sent to me by Susanne (our lovely host for this meme!)  When the package arrived in the mail last week, I was so surprised to see a gorgeous box with the Eiffel Tower on it.....and nestled inside was the most fragrant green tea soap! Mmmm...it is much to nice to use...it sits on my dresser right now because I LOVE the box!!  I just started the study book this week and it is wonderful.  I read a chapter each evening and am learning so much!!  There is a wonderful section about restoration and the Biblical truths are all ones that we know yet we never seem to put into daily practice....it is definitely a thought provoking book.  I love how there are questions at the end of each chapter with Scriptures to look up and to get me thinking......I am loving this book so much and plan on passing it on to a friend...it is too good to keep to myself!  (thanks again, Susanne! and hope ya got the card I sent ya in the mail :) )

  • DAUGHTER DOING DEVOS!  My youngest daughter had gone to her room shortly after lunch on Sunday...we had been home from church for about an hour and I noticed it was really quiet up there. Knowing she didn't have homework, I wondered what she was up to.  She is 12 and had wanted the above Bible for Valentine's Day. (we always give a book to each girl along with special box of chocolates).  She was excited to own a Bible that was "in order" (meaning, chronological order with sections laid out for reading through in one year).  I found her on her bed reading through the month of January.  This just touched my heart "mom, I want to try to catch up to where you are in yours" (I had received a One Year Chronological for Xmas, different version).  You have no idea how my heart just leapt at the sight of her reading the Word of God without prompting from a parent.

  • HUBBY HELPING!  My husband took one evening, after a long day at work, and began to figure out how to fix my little netbook.  I really miss my laptop and he's been gracious enough to let me use his own laptop to write on here.  I couldn't get my camera to work on his though which is why none of these photos in this post are my own.  I pulled them all from various websites.  He thinks he can solve the inner battery problem...but it will take him awhile on Saturday to complete.  And then he has the fun task of uploading every system we like and that I prefer back on it.  Unfortunately, I lost so many pictures from the last 12 months.  But at least I saved some of them onto Snapfish. And I learned a lesson.  Always listen to the teenager when she tells you to use the USB key to back important stuff up. Lesson learned.

These are all just simple things......personal study books, soap, email, helpful husband, new Bibles, movies....but...it's sometimes the simple things that make for a great week.  Oh...and 2 other things that really should have made my list but then there'd be 7....I heard the sound of a pilleated woodpecker when leaving the school where I teach while walking to my car.  Never did see the little guy but that sound is unmistakeable.  I think he was trying to tell me that spring IS coming. Lol.  And....making/writing/sending Valentine Cards to my friends in the small group and to a couple of friends who live out of state.  I love sending cards to special people!

I am thankful to know Susanne from Living to Tell the Story and I hope to meet her in person someday!  She is our gracious, weekly host and it's because of her that I take the time to think back on my week and find those special blessings that God decided to place in my life.  Even the simple things.

So, she was accepted into her major -- how awesome! Such an exciting time for all of you. Such a mix of emotions, I remember.

I just love the story of Silas Marner, but I haven't seen the movie. It's one of the books I wrote about for the Book Lover's Devotional. Have a great week ahead!

Hi Faith! Glad that you got 5 days of school in this week. Snow days are great but making up the days in June isn't fun. My husband helped me out with some computer woes, too. I really appreciated that. I'm glad you got help, too! Hope your weekend is going well...

Congratulations to Courtney. That is very exciting news.

I know how you feel when you see one of your kids reading the Word and doing devotionals on their own. So awesome that Claire is doing that.

I don't know what I'd do without my hubby solving computer issues.

I'm glad you are enjoying the book and have someone you can pass it along to. The little box totally made me think of you and I thought maybe you'd find something to store in it. :v)
