Fall Challenge Book Review #5

I finished another book!!

This was a super easy book to read through because it was a page turner!!  I had to keep going because it was suspenseful and surprising....especially the ending!  I love those kinds of books.

This is the 3rd book in the Amish series about a woman who was raised Amish and is now a chief of police in a predominantly Amish area of Ohio.  I read book one (Sworn to Silence) and just discovered this 3rd book. I'll probably skip book 2 (Pray for Silence) and just wait until her next novel is out.

This book is a mystery, centering around a series of what appear to be hate crimes towards the Amish in the little town of Painters Mills.

Chief Kate Burkholder is the main character and is the chief of police.  We find out in Book One WHY she is no longer Amish.  It seems that the author uses titles that capture the plot of the story but also it is significant to the main character's life....the story behind the story.  In each book, we learn a little bit more about Kate and her life when she was Amish.  We also learn about the many issues that face that population/religious sect and the author does a great job in capturing the essence of some of those issues.

The time period is the present.

The setting is Painters Mills, Ohio

The main characters in each book are Kate and her fellow police detectives/officers.  I have come to really enjoy each character...they really add to the story and plot line.

Summary of Breaking Silence:

An Amish family, the Slabaughs, are the ideal Amish farmers.  They are prosperous and hardworking.  They have 4 children.  The parents and an uncle are found dead in their barn.  It appears to be a horrible accident due to methane gas asphyxiation.  During the autopsy, the coroner discovers that one of the victims had a head wound BEFORE death.  It is clear that foul play is involved.

Who wants to make the Slabaugh children orphans??

Is this murder connected to the string of hate crimes that have been happening to the town's Amish population??

Kate, having grown up Amish, is determined to bring the killer to justice.  Because there are hate crimes involved, an agent, John Tomasetti, is called in by the state.  He and Kate have a long and complex relationship.  They begin to work together to search for clues and figure out these crimes....and in doing so, they uncover a dark secret beneath the calm surface of the Amish community.

My thoughts:

This was a quick read.  It is definitely the kind of book that you can read in one weekend.....or over the course of a couple of evenings.  It's not long and it moves fast because it's a true "page-turner".

It does have some mature themes running through it....I don't recommend this for teenagers under the age of 17 due to some themes of incest and rape.  Those scenes are brief but disturbing to think about.

On a scale of 1-10, I rate this book a 9.

If you are interested in the Amish culture, you would like this series.  However, please keep in mind that it is not Christian fiction.  It is secular.

If you think you want to start reading this series, I highly recommend that you begin with the first book, Sworn to Silence.
