I completed 10 books thus far in the Spring Reading Challenge hosted by Callapiddar Days blog.
The challenge ends on the first day of summer...June 21, and I still haven't read all the books on the list I created. However, I did add to the list, so I completed a good number. I set aside time to read in the late evenings rather than watch TV. There really isn't any thing on the television that I like other than one show. So since reading has always been one of my very favorite things to do, I take out lots of books from the towne library.
This book was excellent!
The ending, though predictable, was done in a way that was kind of a let down. It was too sudden and too perfectly wrapped up. I was disappointed.
The book was very good though at character development and storyline. The author, in my opinion, did a fantastic job of character description and capturing for the reader the nuances of family life in modern suburbia with a troubled teen.
STORY SUMMARY
In the surburban town of Newton, MA the Barber family seems to have it all. Dad (Andy) is an assistant district attorney and is well respected in the community. Mom (Laura) is a typical stay at home mom (previously a teacher) and they have one son, Jacob who is 14 yrs old. One morning, a shocking crime occurs in the park near the school and Jacob is charged with the murder of a fellow classmate.
Rising up to the strong parental instinct of defending a child, Andy begins to protect him. Jacob says he's innocent and Andy believes him. However, many facts come to the surface and Andy realizes how little he really knows his son. His marriage begins to crumble and soon Andy will have to face a trial of his very own----loyalty and justice, truth and allegation, between a past he has tried to bury and a future he cannot imagine.
This story is about a family in crisis. And it brings out the suspense, guilt, betrayal and the fact that sometimes our lives can spin out of control.
Is Jacob innocent?? What happens in the end?? Who committed the crime and why did the mother react the way she did in the very end of the book??
You'll have to read it to find out......(again, I was very disappointed in how the trial wrapped up) but the actual ending was jaw-dropping).
I recommend this novel for ages 17 and older (mainly due to the issue of sexual abuse in the story)
On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest, I rate this novel an 8.

We seem to read at about the same pace. I just finished book 11. I added some to my list too and a couple I won't get to because of that. I also put one aside because it just was not the type of story I like to read.
Yes Susanne, me too!! i actually returned TWO!! one was just awful...it LOOKED good (can't tell a book by its cover!!) but the content was downright ungodly. I mean, I read tons of secular books and never have a problem with most but this was just....ICK. I've had fun doing the challenge....I wish she did it in the summer months too..that's when i have the MOST time to read!! lol
