Heart Matters

I found it amusing that my entry Friday morning in the little prayer book I've been going through this winter was about our hearts....perfect for Valentine's Day!

The entry was about how we take care of our appearance and spend much time on getting ready to face the day, but it's the inward heart that needs maintenance too.  And it reminded me of how I was getting ready for our Game Night Saturday in our home.  We had 3 couples coming over.....the wives are all friends of  mine who are in my small group from church.  We've been doing game night for 4 years now and it's always fun. As I dusted and vacuumed,  and washed sinks, hung clean towels, wiped down counters, and arranged treats, I couldn't help but think of how much time I was taking to make my home presentable.  I usually keep up on the housework, etc so getting ready for a few friends to come over is never really all that time consuming.

Yet....do I spend even half that time praying or meditating on God?

Do I spend as much time in the Scriptures as I do on which mugs to use and which treats to serve?  Do I obsess over what I am spiritually doing as much as I do about a clean and organized home?  Most of my very close friends don't care that I might have laundry in a basket at the bottom of the stairs....but when we have a special social evening, that laundry basket better be either back in the closet or down in the laundry area!

The same is true for our hearts.  They need maintenance...they need to be watered and fed.  And the only way I can do that is to spend time in His Word......in intimate talks with the Lover of my soul.

Matters of the heart are much more important to God than our silverware pattern or our tablecloth choice.

Matters of the heart are what people will see........and if we are to represent Christ well in this world, our hearts need to be maintained.........by His grace, mercy and Love.

I'd rather my guests see a pure heart..........

.............than perfectly arranged table settings..........

a heart that will give love, show mercy, and extend grace.

Oh so true. Good thoughts on where our priorities ought to be.
