This book is the latest in the Alex Cross detective series...one of my very fave series and authors.
STORY SUMMARY
In one night, Washington, D.C. explodes with mystery. First, there is a Rock Creek Parkway "accident" that ends up being what at first looks like road rage but then turns into something far more sinister. And while Alex Cross and his detective- partner Sampson are checking into this death scene, his former boss, Tom McGrath, the chief of detectives, is murdered as is his young girlfriend Edita Kravic. Are these two circumstances related or are there two killers on the loose?
Soon, more dead bodies show up and Bree Stone, Alex Cross's wife, is offered the Chief of Detectives position since her mentor Chief McGrath is dead. She struggles to find her footing in this new position all while trying to help solve these two high profile crimes. When all of a sudden...just days later....more deaths happen! Now the city is in a panic.
The mastermind behind all of these crimes has decided to become the nation's judge, jury and executioner. And he has a horrible master plan in mind plus 14 cohorts willing to shoot and destroy. The FBI comes on board to help and Alex and Bree both decide it is time to take matters into their own hands and help solve this mystery. Little do they know it will put a strain on them emotionally and in their marriage.
Will they find this mastermind in time or will this villain succeed in destroying the nation's capital?
MY THOUGHTS
Well, since I have been reading the Alex Cross books since they came out back in the 1990s or so, I have been hooked into the fictional character and his family.
The author does a great job in sharing what is going on with Alex, his wife Bree, and his children Damon (now a freshman in college), Jannie (now a 10th grader, and Ali, in 2nd grade now. And of course we get treated to Nana Mama, Alex's 91 year old grandmother who helps keep the home fires going and the cooking done!
This book is fast paced and is definitely a page turner. I stayed up late each night this week to read this novel and loved every twist and clue leading up to the "who done it" reveal.
The author touches on family drama, humor, marital strife, greed, and loyalty. It also touches a bit on the very real drug problem in our country as well as the real and sobering truth of human trafficking. It is very well done!
In my opinion, this book is appropriate for ages 17 and older due to mature content.
On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, I rate this a 10.
