AUTUMN SENSES FAVES

Autumn......we're having a wonderful season so far, here in eastern New York.

The temps have been very mild here.....50s and 60s and we haven't had a real frost yet.

The sunshine has been plentiful and yet we've had smatterings of rain to keep things healthy and growing.

This past week I've decided to share FIVE things that blessed my senses.  I'm linking up with other writers who participate in the Friday Fave Fives meme.  Head on over to Susanne's site to learn more about joining in.

  • TOUCH!  I was blessed by the new items of clothing I bought via the online sale of this place.  The lounge shirt is so soft and on chilly nights I'm wearing it as a pajama top.  I plan on wearing it at night this weekend when I'm up in the Central Adirondacks spending some time at one of my favorite lakes.  I'm thankful for soft, warm clothing and the sense of touch.

  • SCENT:  I finally found an autumn scented candle that no one in the house is allergic to!  Dave is allergic to many scents and I do not like pumpkin spice scented anything.  I'm allergic to many of the apple scents although if it's mixed with cinnamon I'm ok.  This fall festival one is made with essential oils and is cinnamon-based with other spices, a hint of musk, and a hint of moss.  It's wonderful!  I'm burning it in the evenings once it gets dark. It sits near the kitchen window by the sink and fills the entire house with it's autumnal scent. I'm thankful for the sense of smell.

  • SIGHT!  Oh the glorious autumn sights.  On Monday (it was a National Holiday) my friend Cheryl and I met in the southern part of the Adirondack Mountains...about a 1.5 hour drive for me (north-west), to the Shaker Mt Wild Forest region.  We hiked a trail I have been wanting to do because of the destination (the above lake) but had never taken the time to hike it.  The trail begins about 1.7 miles from the road so I left my car at the main road,  Cheryl drove her SUV into the trailhead (it is a very rough, rocky dirt road and low clearance vehicles like my Civic would not do well) and then we hiked the beautiful leaf-strewn trail. It is just past peak color in the Adirondack mountains so the scenery was spectacular even with many of the leaves starting to fall. The actual trail is only 1.3 miles to the lake and we  really enjoyed ourselves.  We had a little snack, took some photos, explored the lean-to which is only 10 years old and in pristine shape, and then walked back to her car.  I'm so thankful for the sense of sight and for being able to live so close to my beloved mountains.

  • TASTE: On Saturday, Dave had a lot to do for the upcoming medical  missions trip he signed up for (they leave tomorrow...please pray!) and Courtney, our oldest gal, was in Boston all weekend, so I drove to the eastern edge of Vermont (about 2 hours from our home) and Claire drove 2 hours west from Durham (NH) to meet me for lunch.  We didn't bother going to Parents Weekend because honestly?  "been there, done that" and UNH is great and all but once you've been to one Parent Weekend per child, you've been to all. (in our opinion!).  We had a beautiful fall day...it started out cloudy but cleared up and the sun was glorious on the autumn foliage through-out Vermont.  I ordered Pumpkin Soup and the taste!!  Oh my....the perfect blend of spices and fresh veggies.  Claire had the Veggie Quesadillas.  Then I had a chocolate cupcake (totally vegan) with Lemon Matcha Frosting.  She had a slice of totally vegan chocolate pie.  We actually brought our desserts home/to the dorm as we were so full of the good tasting lunch food.  I loved seeing my girl.....I hadn't seen her since we helped her move into her dorm in mid-August. She told me all about her classes, her dancing and volunteer work.   And I'm so thankful for the sense of taste.  (If you're ever in Brattleboro, Vermont, I highly recommend this cafe!)

  • SOUND!  We are still sleeping with our bedroom windows open a bit since the temps have been nearly perfect for a mild autumn.  And hearing the crickets chirp this time of year is so relaxing!  (my husband thinks they're noisy).  I've realized that as September has turned into October, the crickets do seem to chirp quieter than in the summer months.  At least to my ears!  I'm thankful for the sense of sound and  of crickets at night to help lull me to sleep!

That wraps up my fave list for the week!

I'm heading to the north-west Central Adirondacks for the weekend.  My husband is headed to the Dominican Republic on a medical missions trip with others from  church.  Please keep them in prayer as they will be serving some very needy people (physically, emotionally, spiritually and financially).

Enjoy the weekend!

Yay for new comfy clothes! What beautiful scenery. Unfortunately. we haven't had much leaf color here--some are saying because we got very little rain over the summer. Most leaves are kind of rusty-looking, but I am hoping some color flares out before it's all over. Glad you had a good time visiting with your daughter!

I really like your five senses theme. Always nice to see children who are on their own now - my daughter is coming in tomorrow for the first time in several months. --Ann

Hi Faith, it's been ages since I've popped by for a visit. I have been on a long blog break, but that is over, and I'm back to blog land once again. I sure have missed all my blogging friends.

It's nice to see that things haven't changed at your place since I've been away....you still post the most beautiful photos of such incredible scenery. Wow! I have never experienced a New England fall. In fact, have only been to New England once, and that was in the month of May. No beautiful fall foliage then.

That candle sounds luscious. I love scented candles, though, like you, I have to watch the scents I use, or I end up with a headache.

That pumpkin soup looks yummy. Although I am not a vegan or vegetarian, I AM consuming far less meat these days. I make several vegetarian recipes a week, many with lentils and/or butternut squash. I think a pumpkin soup would fit nicely on my menu!

If you get a chance, I'd love to have you stop by my new blog. (Actually, it's an old blog, but it's been private since I started it in 2006. I have made it public.)

Blessings,
Patti Gardner

I love your idea of the five senses in your fave fives this week. Usually, we don't keep scented candles around since The Prof is allergic, but I found one in Trader Joe's that is ok.
The autumn colors in the Adironacks are amazing!
Enjoy your day tomorrow--praying for Dave's team.

Love that you fit the blessings into a sense theme. That fall candle sounds wonderful. I've never seen a candle with moss as a scent. I don't like a lot scents either. The ones that are called "fresh air, or rain or morning" are usually ones that bother me. And just the last couple years I've become sensitive to "pumpkin". Don't mind the spice part but I figured out it's the pumpkin I don't care for. And anything "caramel or maple" makes the backs of my eyes literally hurt. LOL. How fun that you got to meet up with Claire for lunch. That soup sounds delicious! And your fall pictures are lovely.
