I discovered this author last month when I read her latest novel The Scent Keeper.
When I saw this older one by her at our town library, I had to read it! My sister Joy liked it. It was ok. I loved the various characters.
STORY SUMMARY
Six women, all good friends, are at a dinner party in Seattle where they all live. They are celebrating Kate's recent recovery from breast cancer. They are drinking good fine and eating great food. Kate stands up and challenges everyone to help her celebrate her new lease on life by giving them a deal: they are to tackle one challenge that she will choose for each friend and she will do the one thing that has always terrified her: white water rafting down the Grand Canyon (with her young adult daughter Robin).
The woman must promise to do one thing in the next year that is either new, difficult or a bit scary. Kate gives each woman her challenge.
Will they learn anything from these challenges? and if Yes, what is it?
MY THOUGHTS
This is a warm and thought provoking novel. It's a novel that explores the depths of friendship and the things that challenge us the most. It's a story that depicts each character in a unique way yet also shows that despite our uniqueness, we are all the same in certain ways. It reads at times like a long lyrical poem. It's a beautifully written story about the things that scare us, or challenge us, or speak deep within us. It explores the changes we face as we grow older....and wiser.....
and it shows us that true joy is not in things, or people. True joy is in becoming ourselves.
In my opinion, this book is appropriate for ages 14 and older.
On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, I rate this a 9.

This has been on my radar for awhile now. I'll have to see if the library has it!
