2022 Book Review #18:The Therapist

Whoa!  This book was so fast-paced I read it in about a week. It's part mystery and a whole lot of drama. A new to me author who lives in the U.K.

STORY SUMMARY

Leo and Alice have just moved into a very exclusive, gated community in London.  Alice has a cottage in a more rural area (Harlestone) which she is keeping but renting out.  Leo and Alice have been partners for about 6 months.

When Alice tries to get to know their new neighbors, she discovers a grisly secret about her new home:  a woman named Nina Maxwell was murdered there!  Nina's husband Oliver was the main suspect and ultimately committed suicide. Alice begins to feel a connection between herself and Nina.  Nina had been a therapist who saw clients in the home.

Alice soon becomes obsessed with trying to put together the pieces of the puzzle regarding the murder. Several of her new friends don't believe that Oliver was capable of murdering his wife. They were known as being deeply in love with each other. Most of her new neighbors though really don't want to talk about the murder.  It soon becomes clear to Alice that things are not at all as they seem.  Did one of her new neighbors actually kill Nina?

MY THOUGHTS

This is a great plot with solid characters. There are several characters but it's very easy to keep them straight. They all have very different personalities and I loved the development of them. I thought I knew who the killer really was and then was quite surprised when things took a different turn.  Once you realize just who it is.....the book really takes off and you just cannot put it down until you turn the last page. I love that in a book.

The genre of this book is actually a psychological suspense.  There's mystery and drama surrounding this new house and community of people.

Some themes running throughout this book are:  friendship, elder abuse, manipulation, loyalty, past history/tragedy and the impact on one's future, trust, and the thought "how well do we really know our family, lovers or friends"

In my opinion, this book is appropriate for ages 14 and older.

On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, I rate this a 10.

I've read a few of this author's books. I'd recommend Behind Closed Doors and I enjoyed The Dilemma but I wasn't as impressed with Bring Me Back.
