2024 Book Review #27: Mostly What God Does

I've always loved The Today Show and watched it faithfully back in my early teaching days when Katie Couric was the anchor. Then I missed it for years due to a longer commute and raising two active little girls. Now all these years later, I'm retired from teaching and have discovered that Savannah and Hoda are the anchors. I love both these women!  I always suspected Savannah was a born again Christian but was never sure. This book confirmed it.

SUMMARY OF BOOK

This is a non-fiction book about the love of God. There's a foreward and then the book is divided into 6 Parts:  Love, Presence, Praise, Grace, Hope, Purpose.  Each part has between 4-7 chapters.  The titles are as follows:

  • All my Love, Blinking Cursors, The Bonus Commandment, Like a Mother, You're Soaking in It.

  • Present Tense, God's Telephone Number, He Speaks Our Language, Spooning with God, Praying When You Can't, Psalm 23, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

  • Garment of Praise, Turn Your Eyes, Unsubscribing from Myself, Believing is Beautiful (or, The Shape of Faith),

  • Down to the River, Thou Changest Not, Sin and Loathing, He Reclined, Mercy Me

  • Jesus Answered, The Overnight Note, An Act of God, What About Job?, Send Me Home

  • The Fragrance of the Gospel, Mostly What We (Can) Do, Commencing, Communion, The Last Word
This is followed by Acknowledgements, Notes with Scripture references, etc. and an About the Author page.

MY THOUGHTS

This book is a reflection of Savannah's thoughts on God and what God has shown her over the years. It also can be read like a devotional book which is the approach I took.  I love all the Scriptures and quotes she includes. I love the personal aspect of this book.  I love her vulnerability and  she seems to me to be the "real deal" when it comes to Christianity and what that exactly exemplifies. She had a similar upbringing that I did...in a more legalistic church....and I loved how she included her childhood into this book.

It's very well rooted in Scripture and based on Truth. The truth of who Jesus is. The truth of the Holy Spirit working in people's (Believers) lives. The truth of how God loves us.

My favorite chapters were: You're Soaking In It; He Speaks Our Language; Thou Changest Not; An Act of God and Mostly What We Can Do.

I've highlighted a lot of sentences and Scriptures in this book and I plan on going through it again at some point probably next winter. It's one I will treasure always.

This book would make a great birthday or Christmas gift.

Savannah does an excellent job at helping us to seek and find God's love everywhere.

In my opinion, this book is appropriate for ages 12 and older.

On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, I rate this a 10.

I had that book on hold at the library, but then had to take it off hold when another book came in. I think I will once again see if I can get it. Thanks for the excellent review!
