Saturday 9 Meme

We love Bing in our house! Yes, even my 31 and 26 yr old daughters love his music. What's not to love. I had heard this song but never saw the movie that I remember anyways.
When I saw the questions for today's 9 I just had to participate. You can learn more here.

Saturday 9: But Beautiful (1947)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) The lyrics encourage us to take a chance on love. What's something you've done recently that took you outside your comfort zone? How did it turn out?

I don't know if September counts as recent, but I felt prompted to check out a volunteer opportunity with HomeBound, a group that ministers to shut-ins.  People who are recovering from surgery, in assisted living, nursing homes, private homes, hospitals or rehabs.  Most  are over the age of 75 but some are younger. I never thought I'd volunteer with people dealing with some of the issues they are, but I've been loving it!  I visit 2-3 clients per month and am on the  card sending team. It's a great way to meet other volunteers too as we are required to go in pairs.

2) Bing Crosby introduced "But Beautiful" in the 1947 film, Road to Rio. Name another movie song that became a hit.

OOh....there are So many!  "White Christmas" which first appeared in Holiday Inn, his movie with Fred Astaire. Another one is "I've Had the Time of my Life" from Dirty Dancing. "Maniac" from Flashdance; "Mrs Robinson" from The Graduate

3) Bing's leading lady in Road to Rio was Dorothy Lamour. When she was a teenager, she worked as an elevator operator. With the advent of user-operated/push-button elevators, few elevator operator jobs remain. What's another job that was once commonplace, but has virtually disappeared?

Milkmen.  In the 1960s when I was between the ages of 2-8 (1062-1968) my parents would get their milk delivered in small glass bottles...a dozen each week.  On Saturdays, we would return the milk bottles across town and by afternoon, there would be another delivery.

4) Road to Rio was one of seven Road movies Bing Crosby and Bob Hope made together. They were one the most financially successful comedy teams in history. What movie or TV show always makes you laugh?

Tv Show:  I Love Lucy.  Movie: Groundhog Day.

5) Crosby's given name was Harry but he acquired the nickname "Bing" because as a kid he was a fan of a comic strip character named "Bingo." As a child, did you read the newspaper?

As a child, probably not.  As a pre-teen/teen I used to love reading the Comics every Sunday and Dear Abby.

6) His 1942 version of "White Christmas" is still one of the best-selling records of all time. He was a movie star, nominated three times for the Oscar, winning once. Can you name another performer who has been successful both acting and singing?

Barbra Streisand; Jennifer Hudson; Dolly Parton; Reba McEntire

7) Bing loved golf and enjoyed traveling the world, playing at different courses. If today you were to receive an airline ticket to any city in the world, what destination would you choose? What would you be certain to see/do there?

I've already been to Paris, Rome, Florence, Toronto, and Montreal so I would probably choose something from my bucket list:  London to see The Changing of the Guard and to shop at Harrods and to tour the city and hear the Symphony in person. OR Salzburg Austria to visit the Mozart museum and then tour the rest of the country.  OR Lucerne Switzerland to see Europe's oldest wooden covered bridge because I love covered bridges and I've always wanted to hike in Switzerland.

8) In 1947, when "But Beautiful" was a hit, Farrah Fawcett was born. She became famous for her bathing suit poster, her blonde hair, and a 70s TV show. Without looking it up, do you know the name of that television series?

I think it was Charlie's Angels.

9) Random question -- Are you someone who makes things happen, or someone things happen to?

More of the first: I make things happen because I'm extroverted for the most part and a huge planner/organizer.  But....also the 2nd....things happen to me that I just can't make up!  hahah

HAPPY SATURDAY EVERYONE!  My area of NYS is under a "Winter Storm Watch".....

should be interesting to see if the meteorologists' predictions are correct.

Hi Faith, it is nice that you have traveled so much. I remember going to the movies to see Flashdance and I bought the Cd. My granddaughter let the team know she was under the weather. They still needed her. She did not sing up with the rest but was in the back of the stage on the keyboard away from everyone. She only hugged me and stayed away from everyone else, and her dad picked her up afterwards. The songs they played had special keyboard parts and they needed her. I was with her and for two days and did not get sick. Maybe because I got the flu shot? The flu season is not over, and that virus is always mutating. Nice that you are volunteering. Stay warm.

You have done a lot of traveling. I think that's good for people to do. I always wanted to do more than I have but we were tied to the farm. Can't leave the cows too long.

Would you believe that I've never seen even one of the Road pictures. I do really like Bing though and I never miss White Christmas. One thing I noticed about Bing was that when he sang it was his voice that carried it. Often now, you see singers who move arms and legs and sometimes that seems distracting. Bing would just stand there, arms down and just sing.
