Hold On, Saturday Nine

Well, it's another rainy Saturday here in eastern NY. I had to  cancel a hike the group I lead (SoulSteps) had scheduled for today. There were 15 of us heading to the Long Trail/Blue Loop at Thatcher State Park. This is the 4th Saturday hike I've had to cancel because of rain. Sure wish Dave and I could have brought back the amazing Albuquerque weather with us! So..because I'm stuck inside, I'll particpate in the Saturday 9 meme which I haven't done in awhile.

Saturday 9: Hold On (1990)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This song gives encouragement to someone who is enduring heartache. Have you more recently given support, or received it?

I've recently been a "shoulder to cry on" for a friend of mine who is going through a rough time. I've listened and prayed and shared some tips that have helped me when I have had a similar situation.

2) "Hold On" is featured prominently in the 2011 movie Bridesmaids. It's an anthem for the friends in the film and they love to sing it together. Is there a song that reminds you of good times with a good friend?

yes...."We are Family". A special song for certain family members and many close friends. We even dance to it  sometimes!

3) The video for this song finds Wilson Phillips outdoors on a snowy mountainside and then on a sandy beach. What's the view outside your window?

Grey, pouring rain, green all around because two days of rain this week plus last Saturday's rain really popped our spring green into looking like summer green.

4) The mountain segments were filmed in California's San Gabriel Mountains. The girls were flown to the set by helicopter. Have you ever been in a helicopter?

I sat in one once when I took my students, years ago, on a field trip to the county airport.

5) The members of Wilson Phillips are authentic "California Girls." Wendy and Carnie Wilson's father is Brian Wilson, who wrote the Beach Boys hit. Chynna Phillips is the daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas, who sang "California Dreamin'." Have you been to California? If yes, where did you visit?

yes, my husband and oldest girl who was 4 at the time, and I flew to San Francisco for a week during Thanksgiving week 1997.  Loved the  city as a tourist. Wouldn't wanna live in California. No way. the weather was always iffy and temps were always in the 50s. hardly any sun and tons of smog. But San Fran had some amazing sights and we packed alot into that week. We stayed in an apartment hotel in the Haight Ashbury district and we could walk to where Dave's oldest sister and her family lived in a posh part of the city. They were extremely wealthy so K flew her entire family (all the siblings, spouses, children and parents) out for the week and paid for everything except the sight seeing things. We had tea in the Japanese Garden at Golden Gate Park. Went to museums, the Golden Gate Park Equestrian center where our 5 yr old niece Hanna and our 4 yrs old daughter Courtney took a riding lesson, we hiked in the John Muir Forest, went to Pier 39....all the tourist stuff.  and yes we rode a trolley. Good times but I'm definitely an North-East Coast gal.

6) Another generation of the Wilson family has entered the music business. Carnie's daughter/Brian Wilson's granddaughter, Lola Bonfiglio, participated in the current season of American Idol. Has a family member followed you in your chosen profession?

No, no one in my family is in Special Education although my youngest sister's husband was a Special Education Middle school teacher for years and now is a Special Ed Admin.  And their oldest daughter Emma just graduated from college with a BS in Education and will be teaching a 4th grade class in Vermont next year.

7) In 1990, when this song was popular, satellite radio was in its infancy and streaming was unheard of. Our cars gave us a choice of AM/FM and maybe CD player/tape deck. When you're driving and a favorite song comes on, are you more likely to sing along if you're alone? Or don't you care if anyone hears you?

I sing all the time in the car if music is on and i know the song. When Dave and I travel together, we are always singing along to Queen, Billy Joel, Journey, Kansas, Abba, Keith  Green, Newsboy, etc etc

8) Also in 1990, actor Alan Hale Jr. died. He was "the skipper" on Gilligan's Island. Without looking it up, can you name the other six castaways? (If not the actors, then their characters.)

Oh boy....with out googling:  Gilligan, obviously.  The skipper, the professor, Ginger, MaryAnn (or was it MaryEllen?) ...and the wife? (the prof had a wife but i don't know her name).

9) Random question: What superhero would you like to have as your best friend?

Captain America. (because Chris Evans is adorable!) Because only Captain America would be able to make America great again given that the current admin are just....well....UGH DT is making a mess of everything and is just so embarrassing. the current leader is a joke. It's horrible. Captain America to the rescue!!✊😊

No, the Professor did not have a wife. It's not that I'm a big Gilligan fan. I barely remember the show. But the THEME is embedded deep and unshakably in my brain: "There's Gilligan, the Skipper, too. The millionaire and his wife. The movie star, the professor and Mary Ann, here on Gilligan's Isle!" I can never remember where I left my phone, which I NEED, but the lyrics of a theme song to a show I didn't even like? I can recall that in a snap. PS "Captain America to the rescue!!✊😊" <<<< Love this.

Chris Evans is nice to look at. I was last in SF in 2018. My cousin and I took the Bart into downtown, and we walked everywhere. I think we did 8 miles! Send the rain our way because we do need it. I would love to live your way by so many forests. Yes, our nation is in our sorry state. I have a few friends in other countries and can't believe what is happening to the US. Only God knows! Have a nice weekend!

On another note (see what I did there? LOL) did you know Chynna Phillips is a very strong born again Christian? I follow her on youtube. She's very real and has such a powerful testimony.
