2025 Book Review #35: The Blue Hour

Wow. Just wow.

A real page turner that I read in just a few days.  This is a really good story.

STORY SUMMARY

Eris is an island off the coast of Scotland. It has one house, one person living in it, and only one way out...when the tide is low.....It is totally unreachable for about 12 hours from the Scottish mainland.

Vanessa, a famous artist lived there with her notoriously unfaithful lout of a husband, Julien. Julian disappeared about 20 years ago.   Vanessa died of cancer a few years ago.

Grace, a lonely spinster type woman, who is not pretty, is now living there in the house. She befriended Vanessa about 20 years ago and although she misses Vanessa, she is content with her isolated life. She is retired from being a surgical doctor.

A shocking discovery has been made in a London art gallery where Becker, who works for the gallery, and his wife Helena, who also works for Fairburn, are trying to figure out what kind of bone has been used..the bone is the shocking discovery because it is human! Sebastian, and his elderly mother Emmeline, want this case solved.  Sebastian's father, Douglas, had an affair with Vanessa Chapman years ago. Douglas died of a shooting accident.

Because of this human bone discovery, secrets from the past come spilling out....and someone at Eris...Grace....doesn't want these secrets to emerge.

Just whose bone is it??

MY THOUGHTS

This is one gripping page-turner. It is a chilling look at the power of friendship, jealousy, bitterness, adultery, art, legacy, ambition, betrayal.

It's a good look at how an artist's work is open to interpretation and profit and should their private life be examined after they die??

This is a very fast read with excellent character development and an exquisite setting.

Not only is this a suspenseful book, it's got a surprise twist at the end that I didn't see coming. It made me sad. And angry. But wow......what a look at a twisted character!

The character Grace is extremely obsessive to the point of mental illness.

I didn't like her. I don't think I was supposed to.

I loved the parts where the author describes the creative process that Vanessa took with her various forms of art.  I thought that was so well done.

The one thing I don't like is the use of the F word in these contemporary novels. I feel like it lacks creativity.....can't the authors come up with something else? It's so crass and low class!!  But for that, it would have received a perfect 10 from me.

In my opinion, this book is appropriate for ages 17 and older although it's an easy enough read for ages 12 and older.  The content is mature.

On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, I rate this a 9.
