Book Review: The Tinker's Daughter

Do you read aloud to your child(ren) before bedtime?
I always have. My husband and I usually take turns.

Lately it has mainly been me. Claire will be 10 in less than 6 months but she still wants someone to read a chapter a night to her. My oldest was the same way. We read aloud until she entered 5th grade. Once we read an entire book as a family during the winter. ("Because of Winn Dixie"). We then watched the movie.
Reading is important in our house and we always have books lying around besides our Bibles!

The book pictured above is one I bought for my oldest when she was in the 4th grade.
It is from a set of Christian historical fiction books based on actual lives of the children featured in each book. Famous children/parents.
I just finished reading it to Claire. It is a book that is about the 5th grade level and she could read it her self (she is above grade level for reading and comprehension). BUT...I enjoyed reading it aloud so much the first time that I wanted to do it again! And we both loved the experience.

The name of the series is "Daughters of the Faith" Series. You can find them at any Christian bookstore or online at CBD.com

Here is a quick summary:
Title: The Tinker's Daughter: A Story based on the LIfe of Mary Bunyan
Genre: Historical Fiction based on facts
Author: Wendy Lawton

John Bunyon, who wrote the very famous book Pilgrim's Progress, only mentions one of his 6 children in his memoirs. That child is Mary who was born blind in 17th century England. She had a special place in her father's heart.

When John is arrested for unlawful preaching, little Mary travels along the streets of Bedford every day to bring soup to the prison for her father. She is determined to prove to everyone that she is independent and that her blindness cannot hinder her. She often quotes "I can do all things." But...she leaves out the most important part of that verse!
Finally, after a serious accident, she realizes that only by turning to God, who is the source of all strength, can she do all things. Through Christ.

I highly recommend this book for children ages 8 to 12.
Read it with your child!

Book reading is cool, I loved to read when I was a kid. I really am impressed with families that love to read! I really enjoyed reading to my siblings and to my own children too. This looks like an interesting series. Thanks for the book report!
