I had no idea this book was a Christian fiction book!!
Usually I can tell Christian fiction vs regular fiction as soon as I open the cover and turn the page.
Not this one!!
This book is amazing....very thought-provoking, life-changing, and believable.
It's contemporary fiction with lots of spiritual undertones and it is not sappy at all!! it even includes the salvation message, written in such a way that just grabs the reader and pulls you in!
The setting is a drive from Washington D.C. to South Carolina and centers, for the most part, around the main character, Rose.
Rose has come a long way from her southern roots that included Sunday church and her Mamaw's fried chicken. She is now a high-powered child advocate in our nation's capital and married to a successful man named Jack who loves her deeply but who has moved out of their house......WHY does he move out??
Rose has always longed for peace and happiness...but...it has eluded her. Her marriage is on the edge of falling apart and her mind is filled with the chaos that is her currant life.
She needs to head home...to the south...and it's a place where she escaped from....she headed north to get away from her mother....so...WHY is she going back down??
On the drive down, she is faced with the demons of her mind, her memories of childhood, her re-living of her coming-of-age, and finally has to deal with the issues that have kept her away from her roots for over 10 years.
What happens on the drive south??
Who is the elderly lady....what is the significance of the rose that one of the characters has? What about the young mother with the devotional book??
And what happens when Rose has an accident??
Does her marriage get restored or is it too late?
Does she find God??
Can one ever really go home again??
These are all questions that get answered in the pages of Flies on the Butter.... the title is taken from a song by Wynonna Judd that inspired the author to write this story.
I highly recommend this book and think it's appropriate for ages 14 and older.
On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest, I rate this a 10!
