2018 Book Review #21: Everything We Keep

This is the author's  first novel.

I hope she writes more.  It was excellent!

STORY SUMMARY

Aimee Tierney has it all:  supportive, hard-working parents who own their own restaurant and are getting ready to retire and want Aimee to take over as sous chef; an artist fiancee (James) who also works in his family's business, Donato Enterprises, with his older brother Thomas and his cousin Phil;  and they have their  own home in southern CA. They have been best friends since elementary school and then became childhood sweethearts.  They are in their late 20's.

However, on the very date that they are to be married...a Saturday in July.....Aimee, instead, is burying her fiancee James Donato.  James vanished in a boating accident off the coast of Mexico while on a business trip.  But the funeral....and a strange woman at the cemetary.....leave Aimee feeling very unsettled....and so she begins to delve into James' disappearance.

There are signs that he is not really dead!!

As she accepts the fact that her parents sold their restaurant to someone else and as she tries to buy and open her own coffee cafe with the help of her best friends, Kirsten and her husband Nick, and her single friend Nadia, she also meets Ian, a world renowned photographer who is very interested in dating her.  She makes it clear that she is only interested in a friendship, yet ends up telling him all about James and his disappearance.

They head to Mexico, based on some information from a Private Investigator, and find Carlos.....a man who is eerily similar to James, including his art work, his handedness, and his gestures. He has some scars, though that James never had. And  he has absolutely no idea who Aimee is.

As they all begin to search for the truth, several secrets come out about the Donato family.  What is Phil really up to??  How involved in James' disappearance is Thomas, and why?? and what about the secret that James and Aimee have held on to ever since the night of their engagement??

Aimee questions everything about the life that she and James had created.....and just below the surface is a truth that might be able to set Aimee free to love again....or shatter her forever.

MY THOUGHTS

Excellent fast paced story.

I loved this book and all the characters....they are rich in depth and personality.

The book mainly centers on familial relationships, childhood emotional and physical abuse, friendship, love, and discovering truths about people we hold dear and the lengths they will go to protect us.

It also touches on DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) which used to be known as Multiple Personality Disorder, as well as DID with Fugue state.  This is an actual mental disorder usually brought on by major childhood trauma.  It affects memory.

I found myself longing for Aimee to discover the truth about James long before the author actually tied everything together because I wanted her to fall in love with Ian.  I won't tell you what happens when she discovers the truth as I don't want to ruin the book for you.

It's full of love, forgiveness, and learning to let go so you can move forward.

In my opinion, this book is appropriate for ages 17 and older, due to some mild mature content.

On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, I rate this a 10.
