I've been reading the Alex Cross detective series since the first book Along Came a Spider was published in 1993. Patterson has written many novels including several series but the Alex Cross series is the one I am faithful to. I don't read his other books. I have read every single Alex Cross book in order. (it's kind of necessary to read them in order as a couple of the "bad guys" appear more than once and of course we have his family that grows up and changes over the course of the series.). This book that came out in 2021 did not disappoint me like the last couple did. Fear No Evil is the 29th book in the series. #30 is being released next week! This was just amazing!
STORY SUMMARY
Dr Alex Cross and his life long friend and former partner, Detective John Sampson, are about to go on the trip of a life time. They have been waiting to go to Montana, specifically, the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area for about 20 years. John is going to heal from his wife Billie's death from Lyme Disease complications. His 7 yr old daughter Willow, will stay with Alex's wife Bree, Alex's grandmother, 90 something Nana Mama, and Alex's 2 younger children: Jannie, a senior in high school and Ali a middle school student. His oldest child, Damion, is away at college. Everything seems all set for their big wilderness rafting trip.
Until....they get the phone call from Ned Mahoney, FBI. They have a drug cartel to track down. And Bree has to jet off to Paris to track down someone who might be connected to the drug cartel.
Little do they know, they will end up in the Montana wilderness. But they're going to be the targets of two rival assassins, both whom are controlled by the "Mastermind" or "M" who has been stalking Alex and his family for years.
Darkness will fall. The river will churn into rapids during a rain storm and shots will ring out all throughout the forest. There is no backup. There is no way out.
Fear no evil.
And will we finally learn who Mastermind/M really is??
MY THOUGHTS
This is another "on the edge of your seat" novel by Patterson featuring Alex Cross. Of course the character development was already well established in the first few books. And now the children are growing older which is always interesting to read about. For some reason, Nana Mama is still going strong at 90+ years. I'm glad she hasn't died yet.
Bree is interesting in this book.......I learned more about her character as a wife and private investigator now that she works for Bluestone Group. I enjoyed the part about Paris and her adventure there even though some of it was a bit over the top far fetched.
The real excitement is knowing that Alex is close to learning just who M is. Bree gives us a hint in one part of the book that I'm not sure every reader will pick up on. I did......because I've been intrigued by this mystery for years. But it's very subtle. Read carefully when Bree talks about thinking she might know who M is and also read carefully the next chapter where Alex goes to the north shore of MA near the NH border.
But like all amazing Patterson books, this one leaves Alex hanging again. However, now we the readers know who M is!! Patterson makes us wait until the very last chapter of course...and it is freaking fantastic. It's just brilliant. And hopefully Alex will learn this in the soon to be released next book Triple Cross.
In my opinion, this book is appropriate for ages 17 and older (due to mature content such as the mention of drugs, guns, violence).
On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, I rate this a 10.

Wow, this series has been going a long time. You are one faithful reader to it. It sounds so interesting but I don't think I have the gumption to go back that far and start the series.
