It's finally looking like Winter here in eastern New York! I was actually thrilled that we got about 5 inches of white stuff to cover the muddy, dreary yards. We woke up to snow on Monday! So that's one fave......I'm here to participate in the weekly gratitude meme hosted by Susanne. Head on over here to link up your five fave blessings from the past week or read others.
FIVE FAVES
- WOODPECKER! On Saturday morning I was standing at the kitchen sink looking out the window while washing up some breakfast pans and all of a sudden I saw a very large woodpecker at our suet feeder in the pear tree. It was a pileated!!! This is huge. It is the very first time in all of our 28 years here that we have seen an actual pileated woodpecker (the kind with the red crown). We've heard them in the Adirondack mountains on hiking trails and have never spied one, mainly because they do not like humans. I decided to NOT try to get my iphone as I didn't want to spook him by moving, so I have no photo to show you. He made me smile because I just loved them as a child when I would hear them in the woods behind our Adirondack camp and also I just think they are a fun bird. I'm thankful I got to see him! (and nope...as of this writing he hasn't been back...at least not while we've been home).

- SNOW DAY! Sunday night into Monday we had our first snow since early December! Dave works from home on Mondays anyways so he was all set. I first got a text from my director saying it was a 2 hour delay that quickly turned into a snow day. Here in my neighborhood we received about 5 inches of the white stuff and I was ok with that. Our youngest daughter made it to work and back, from her apartment, ok. Our oldest daughter had to take a personal day because her apartment complex never bothered to plow the lots or roads until well past midday! Her boss was ok with it and the other woman in the office also stayed home. Thankfully, everyone stayed safe and it was very pretty snow to watch come down. I'm very thankful that eastern NY finally got some snow (cause I do not want it in April!)

- SPRING COLOR! While I was at the grocery story Saturday morning, I spied this very deep purple African violet. It just called my name so I popped it into the cart and decided I just needed some spring color since the whole week had been so gloomy and grey! I looked at the plant when I got home, after transplanting it into a pot for our family room (the sliding doors face east which is how African violets grow best) and I said "that's Patti". (I always name our plants....currently we have Patti and Sylvester, our snake plant). I'm thankful I found this pretty plant and I'm thankful I ran into my long time friend E at the store too! We chatted for a bit and I thanked God for this friend of many years.

- DELIVERY! Wednesday afternoon Dave had a work meeting at the main office in the city to the west of us, and I had a chiropractic appointment after my work. I was planning on running errands after my neck treatment, but it was heavily snowing when I got out and the visibility wasn't great due to fog so I went right home. Meanwhile, Dave had texted that he was staying for a work dinner.......compliments of the company....so I decided to order via doordash and get a wrap and salad from my fave local diner. I'm thankful for quick deliveries and good food someone else prepared.
- SUNSHINE!! Yesterday, the sun finally came out after what has felt like an entire 2 weeks without it. I mean it actually popped out from behind the grey clouds and even a bit of blue sky appeared. The other teacher and I decided "let's go". It was easy to get 5 teachers/therapists to walk with the 8 students we had yesterday. Oh what fun it was to take a nice long walk around 3 buildings on our campus (an empty building sits across from ours and the county social services building is right next door with the police station at the bottom of the hill). The children loved splashing in the puddles and stomping on the slushy snow. H and I loved just standing still for a moment with the sun on our faces. I'm thankful the sun came out!!

Hi Faith. It sounds like you had a good week. You get a lot of snow days and snow delays. It's great that the agency you work for is concerned about the safely of students and staff. I love woodpeckers, but usually only hear them when we are out in the more wilderness areas. I think the last time I heard one was at Yellowstone Park. I also heard one last time we were at Great Basin National Park, hiking on a fairly empty and secluded trail. I love your African violet. I used to have several, but haven't had very good luck with them lately, and it is hard to find them around here for some reason. It's great you got a little sunshine yesterday. We haven't seen the sun for days and more clouds and snow storms are in the forecast. I have never used DoorDash, but it is a convenient way to get a good dinner on a busy night. I hope you have a good weekend. See you again soon!
I'm glad you got your snow day! And that everyone was safe. And that you had a warm and sunshiny day to take the kids out for a bit. How neat to spy the woodpecker. I am so thankful for restaurant delivery services, too.
Faith, wow it seems like we were just doing this post.. time flies!! I am a bit jealous of your snow.. We probably will not get any unless it decides to visit in March. Such a strange weather pattern this winter!; makes me think a good time for the Lord to re- turn. well I have certain reasons you will read on my page for that as well! Anyway, I love your violet, I find them so luscious but alas I do not have a green thumb when it comes to house plants. Lynn forbids me to buy any more!! I understand how marvelous it was to air out the kiddies and enjoy that lovely walk. Especially the younger kids really need time in the fresh air!; That is another reason we need a cold snowy snap.. To kill off the various bugs we have, not only viral but nasty creepy crawlies! Anyway have a blessed weekend!

How exciting to see the woodpecker! Sounds like a "Woody" Woodpecker. I'm glad you were able to stay home because of the snow day. I still love to watch snow fall but I'm very happy if I don't have to go out in it. Door Dash and home delivery would be wonderful. I've never done it but I've been tempted. I'm glad you all could get some fresh air on the sunshiny day. We have sunshine today which I love. It's been rainy lately. Have a great weekend.
How lovely to catch site of the woodpecker. We had 2 robins in our garden yesterday. We've often seen 1 but this is the first time I've seen a pair. Oh I love your African Violet. I need to get one - as a reminder of my Mum as she always had them in her home. The only house plants I seem to do well with are spider plants but the cheese plant we were gifted when we moved into our house is still alive so maybe I could keep an violet alive. Have to source one first. Glad you enjoyed the snow. Have a good weekend.
It sounds like you had a great week. The pileated woodpeckers are so cool! We don't have them here, but I've seen them in two other states. Great spotting on your part:) I love flowering houseplants. I don't have much luck with African violets, though. I don't think I have the right sunlight for them. We are having an unusually snowy January, however, I don't think it will stop us from getting snow in April. It's our snowiest month:(
Quite a few extra, unexpected blessings this week! Glad you spied that woodpecker!! And that you are enjoying snow. Not sure I consider snow a blessing but it is exciting (and oh so pretty to watch fall) when it is in someone else's neighborhood - ha!! Here's to a weekend just as enjoyable!
No snow or woodpeckers here where I live. We were at 69 today and sunny all week. I have been sitting outside the last couple of days getting my vitamin D. We picked up our younger grands today and their 2 dogs. They are off school on Fridays. The older two stay with us during the week since our daughter has to leave be at work at 7am and she gets home at 7pm. She has one workday off a week on a rotating schedule and they stay at their place then. It is the way we get to be active grandparents and we are blessed. Enjoy your weekend! We will have a quiet weekend to ourselves.
I name my plants too. My shamrock is named...Paddy.
My grands had a snow day on Wednesday and they were so happy. I think the teachers were just as happy.
Love the woodpecker story!
