RELAXING RECREATION

The Timberholm Inn
Stowe, Vermont
28 June 2023

It looks very unassuming.

Hard to tell by looking at the porch in the late afternoon, drizzly day light, that the furniture has bright splashes of colored flowers on it and cheerful pillows with little Christmas style bulbs glowing at night that this place was absolutely the epitome of rest and relaxation.

Inside was like a rustic palace.  A large great room, divided into 4 sections: 2 dining areas with 2 long tables and chairs for breakfast; a fireplace area with 2 couches and 2 armchairs and large coffee tables; another reading area with 2 chairs and a couch and an outdoor deck/porch running the length of the back of the Inn with 4 Adirondack style chairs and a picnic table. The rooms were rustic but comfortable with everything in knotted pine or oak.  We had a 4 poster full sized bed, a private bathroom, mini fridge and tv that we never used because we were there to be unplugged. I only went on social media via my phone to upload photos of our various hikes.

Hannah and Eric, our hosts, had the most awesome breakfasts waiting for us each day. Vermont coffee, assorted teas, juices, cider, the best blueberry pancakes I've ever had (no joke), an amazing veggie quiche, amazing scones and muffins; assorted berries and assorted melons. One day was "order a breakfast sandwich" that Eric did for us.  I had cheddar cheese, egg, bacon (yes I actually ate one piece of real bacon!), and a slice of apple. It was divine.

If you ever go to Stowe, Vermont, I highly recommend The Timberholm Inn.  The prices were affordable and it was so peaceful in the evenings.

We had relaxing recreation.  Everything is very laid back in Vermont. So very different from the Capital Region of New York State.  There's no rushed busyness. And yet all of the service at the various places we ate, drank, or recreated at, were top notch and timed well.  They weren't slow in their service and people in Vermont are very polite and open.  Again, so unlike New York! It was refreshing.

Our first day there, before arriving in Stowe, we popped into the Visitors Center in the state capital of Montpelier to find good coffee and some information about the area. Again, very efficient service and she even recommended a fantastic coffee shop/bakery where Dave and I stopped before entering the town of Stowe. We had the most amazing Maple Creme cookie and I had a wonderful cup of coffee with maple creamer and Dave had a chai latte.  Montpelier's Visitor's Center had outdoor art.  The title of these pieces were The Elements of Shelter: Water, Fire, Wood, Earth, Metal.  Below are a few pics:

After settling into our room and having a look around the Inn, we relaxed in our room and decided to try a place our niece Emma had recommended.  But..we didnt need to drive all the way to Burlington because Stowe actually had one!  We had amazing food and hard cider/beer.   Dave had a local IPA and I had the Shacksbury Cider in Yuzu Ginger.  We shared the Evolution Salad and a flatbread titled Cheese and Herb (with 2 different kinds of cheeses).  It was all amazing. Great ambiance too.

The next morning, although cloudy with a slight chance of rain, took us to two different hikes.  I'll share the first one today and then the 2nd one tomorrow.  The first hike we did was more like a peaceful, quick walk on mostly boardwalk through a wetlands of Putnam State Forest to Moss Glen Falls.  Moss Glen Falls is Vermont's highest waterfalls and many people come to visit this site each year. In fact, as we were leaving the trailhead, a large busload of day camper children were arriving. Here are my fave pics from that hike (I probably have more posted on FB or Instagram). We wanted to do the entire loop trail but the trail is temporarily closed beyond the falls so after viewing the falls and taking alot of photos, we headed back to our car for Adventure #2.  I'll share that adventure with you tomorrow!

A peaceful place where we were the only hikers until we were halfway back to the car.......

I have now hiked to the tallest waterfalls in the Adirondacks and Finger Lakes (NYS),  the Berkshires (Massachusetts)  and in Vermont.

it really was Susanne! And NO headaches/neck pain or back pain at all the whole time other than a hunger one that advil took care of before we could get out to the restaurant. (Stowe is very spread out....it sometimes took a while to get to where we were going).
