2024 Book Review #35: The Teacher

I've seen this author's novels at the towne library but have never read one before. Decided to take out her latest and WOW...talk about a page turner!!  Dynamite characters and plot.

STORY SUMMARY

Eve and Nathanael have been married for several years.  They still don't have children  although Eve would like to get pregnant.  They are both teachers at Caseham High School in western Massachusetts. Eve teaches Trig and Nate teaches English.  This year they both have a student named Addie (Adeline) Severson in their classes. Addie lives with her mother who is a nurse and recently widowed.  Addie's father, an alcoholic died the previous year from a bad fall down their stairs while drunk. Addie's best friend was Hudson Jankowski but he now hangs out with the most popular girl in school....Kenzie Montgomery. Kenzie torments and bullies Addie.

Last year, the high school was rocked by a scandal! Addie was at the center of this scandal and it involved another Math teacher named Art Tuttle.  Art is now out of a job, forced to resign, because of what Addie did.  This makes her very unpopular with most of her junior year classmates.

Addie can't be trusted, according to Eve. She lies.  She cheats. She hurts people.  She destroys lives. At least that's everyone believes who knows her.

But really....nobody knows the real Addie. Nobody knows the secrets that could destroy her if people at her school...including teachers and the principal Ms Higgins....ever found out. When Eve discovers the truth.....and it is something shocking....Addie will do anything to keep her quiet.......

But will she really??

MY THOUGHTS

This book is one of the most faced paced dramas and mysteries I have ever read. I read this in just 3 evenings. It's phenomenal. It's a story that has 2 plots, really.  I am not going to delve into the plot that isn't mentioned above, because it would ruin everything for you.

I liked that there wasn't swearing in this book and no explicit s*x scenes although there's a hint of it.

The character development really makes this book move. The book is told in 3 voices:  Eve, Addie, and Nate.

This is a book about secrets that get twisted, long-awaited revenge, and betrayals.

Themes in this story are:  the teacher-student relationship; marital relationships; compulsive shopping/spending; childhood sexual abuse; stalking; betrayal, secrets, alcoholism, revenge, trust, forgiveness, friendship, bullying.

The ending is absolutely unexpected, full of twists and just brilliant. It left me wishing the story would go on. But good things must come to an end.

If you like fast-paced, light reads, this book is for you.

In my opinion, this book is appropriate for ages 14 and older.

On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, I rate this a 9.
